Detector for the deaf

No, it doesn't sound crazy! I think it shows what a wonderful friend you are by trying to come up with an idea that will help your hearing impaired friend be able to MD again. :) Good luck and God Bless.

I don't know about the intensitity of the bulb but I have seen an LED or wheat bulb attached to a headphone plug that lit up when a signal was received. Cool idea though. Good luck in your quest.

or one with different vibrations!
somtimes the deaf can just look at whats on the screen but it helps to have mor than that.my freind austin is deaf but he dosent md.

There are a lot of detectors for the hearing impaired. They are target ID detectors. Also there is an accessory called the Vibraphone that will cause a vibration to the detector instead of a sound indication.

Thanks All for the info, now my friend doesn't have to wait for me to develope one.

Trimm makes a headphone that lets you hear through bone conduction. It is not as comfortable as the padded headphones but it works. They are obsolete but you can find them on ebay as they are very popular with ham radio operators. If your friend wears glasses you won't be able to cinch it up to the temple but the bone behind the ears works fine for me. Should work for anyone who is losing their hearing. Might be a problem for those who were born deaf. siegfried schlagrule

just the tone ID wont work for hearing impaired...i have a Garrett GTA 1000 that the audio output doesnt work....other than that the machine works good....I tried to use it like this .....you would have to watch the screen at all times and not where you are going....could get pretty dangerous

I once tested a detector that had to bulbs.
One gren bulb for non ferrous targets.
One red light for iron targets.
That was long time ago.
Maybe you can find one on e-bay.

There is (was?) a NY club that semi-specilaized in this. Light bulb instead of headphone. Charlie Garrett mentions it in his book "Modern Metal Detectors".

Noble pursuit - go for it.

Whispers said that his friend's hearing is "shot" which means that his hearing ability has deteriorated. With that in mind, I believe SS's suggestion about the "bone-phone" type of headphones would work great. Plus the guy could keep his head up and swivelling to keep his "situational awareness" updated.

check out ebay for the tiny vibration motors that are used in the whites bullseye and other types of pinpointers.
these use such a tiny amt. of power to work you should be able to hook one up to the md. and instead of headphones attach it to a wrist strap so he would feel a vibration. then he could look at the screen like the rest of us to check the vdi #'s

Don't know if they're still around, but there was a company making bone conductive phones called Bone-Phone. They had two different style headphones and one that drapped around the neck using the collar bones. Had the one that drapped. Kinda weird feeling listening to something through your shin!?!?

If you want to make one you might look at using the vibrator from a broken cell phone. A trip to the thrift store and a couple resistors might do the trick cheap!

A good idea for being aware of your situational awareness is; when you get down to dig, make sure the sun is at your back, casting shadows to your front, that way you can see the shadow of someone approaching you from behind. But, if there is no sun, keep one of you probes always at hand, My probe saved me from a pit bull attack, I was kneeling down digging a target and I heard something growling and snarling approaching me rather quickly, as I turned around to see what it was, it was already in its lunge attack mode, it sounds cruel, but I ran it through with my probe, then beat it with my trencher shovel till it stopped moving. There were no tags or collar on the dog, that was the deepest hole I ever dug in a park. A little while later some old lady came through the park looking for her dog, oh well.... Keep the dang thing on a leash! I told her, no I haven't seen her dog.

i have seen a firefly lite for the ace250. i dont know if they make it for other detectors or not. it plugs into the headphone jack and sitts atop the control box. i think they said there was a seqence of flashes for target seperation if im not mistaken.lol haha i rymed.i only looked at it once online though.hope that helps

I really think this should be pursued. Great ideas.
