Decided to try something different today and hit the cape at low tide to see what could be found. I know shipwrecks abound in the ocean off this area so I thought I'd give it a shot. Few people on this beach and the tide was nice and low. The breakwaters here create a nice scalloped look to the beach and creates some nice low bowls to detect in. Most of the targets were found either in the water (knee to waist deep) of the damp sides of the scallops. Lots of copper/brass sheeting. Not sure if this is from the hulls of old ships or what but have found lots of it along this stretch before.
Fresh from the beach:
Quick hose down for 1st cleaning:
Had a couple of "beach cookies" to open up and see what was inside. I could tell that a couple were military projectiles (.50 cal) before even opening them:
Best find was the "Miraculous Medal" pendant and a thimble. When I first saw the date (1830) I was surprised but after some research, the date is on all the medals/pendants and denotes a specific date that the Virgin Mary appeared and is remembered in these medals. Prob more modern (although the ocean hasn't been kind to it) pretty sure it's silver, tested, but not marked (at least not in the places still there!) The thimble is brass but have no idea how old or if its's modern. Can anyone tell? I looked (and cleaned it to find) a makers mark or logo but can't find anything. I'm guessing from the "lip" on it that it was pressed in a machine but they have had machines for that since the 1700's so who knows...any help on it would be great!
Last is the whatsit....it is copper with a metal mesh screen (steel?) Broken on one end but have no idea what it may have been. Anyone have an idea?
Thanks for looking!
