Detecting grave yards

I have hunted outside a graveyard that was fenced in. I just don't feel that I could detect inside the graveyard. Seems a bit too much even for me...and it might be illegal.

While the actual possession or use of a metal detector in a graveyard probably isn't illegal, logic would dictate that you would have to dig to get what you find.
And I don't know of ANY graveyard where digging would even be REMOTELY "ok", not to mention most likely illegal.

I wouldn't dig up the dead guys just about a foot if that...

I don't think depth has anything to do with it. If you want to turn people against metal detecting in a HELL of a hurry, digging in a graveyard is a sure way to do it.

We have enough bad publicity out there.

I don't know of many old public places besides that any tips?

You might take a trip to your local library and check out a book on the history of your town. It is bound to be some photos and go from there. Look for the oldest parts of your town and see if any old houses are in that area...then go knock on doors. GL

Thanks for the tips I'll have to go to the library soon :)

Don't detect in graveyards.

Respect the dead.

OK...here is the skinny on Cemetaries...They ARE PRIVATE property open to the public...This is a little wierd, as the Cemetary itself is public, but each gravesite is Private...The gravesites are bought by individuals and are therefore Private Property...Do you really want to take the chance that 1000, 100000, or more Individuals would charge you with tresspassing? Also most states have grave robbing laws, and digging anywhere inside a graveyard would get you tossed in jail very quickly I would think...I have heard of some folks who have hunted old Cemetaries near old churches...I myself would stay well clear of anyones final resting place...

HH,

If you must tect the cemeteries, you gotta go at night, alone, you must go at night, alone. And no flashlight, no gloves, no coil covers, no propointer allowed, that is strictly wrong, and avoid concentric search coils, this is important. The dead hate it when you dig on their resting grounds, and they hate anything you do to make your tectin easier, they sense it, they can feel your tectin energies and tactics and they will get you. DO NOT USE CONCENTRICS IN CEMETERIES. You have been warned. And dont forget, no flashlights or gloves or coil covers. If you try to go there with a propointer, you will not return.

If I go I'm gonna go in the day with a pro pointer and defiantly NOT die LOL

I have hunted lots of parking lots and around the perimeters of some really old cemeteries but could never bring myself to go inside. I would think the better finds would be at the gathering points around it anyways.

How do you detect parking lots? We're they dirt? Or gravel?

I don't think we have a cemetery around here that has a paved parking lot. Most of the ones I have detected haven't had anyone buried there in 50+ years.

If you hunt grave yards I hope you get caught and arrested and fined.
