I detect occasionally for a private archeological company which does excavation for the county. This site is roman to early medieval, although i only detect the roman part of this place. Not much to show as i start detecting when the top soil is removed (and most of the artefacts). Good thing is that the finds this deep are often in a very good condition. Top find was a beautiful Sestercius of Faustina in the basement of the main building. I made some pics to show how the site looks, you can see the different colours of the soil where trash pits, post holes and groundwork were. Look close and you can see the red roof tile fragments. The pic with the circle in the middle with roof tiles also was the well of the homestead. I did one more hour on a new field too, that are the last pics. Sorry, the Sestercius hopped between the other finds...

super cool coin

Faustina Junior Æ Sestertius. DIVA FAV-STINA PIA, draped bust right / SIDERIBVS RECEPTA S-C, Faustina as Diana, standing right, holding torch, crescent behind neck. RIC 1715

Yeap, I can see why you were happy, its a nice looking largie!

Thanks, and i have to hand it over tomorrow morning.....

It's all part of the deal, done it a few times myself. Thankfully, we never got the finds today on an archie dig, because I would be hurting right now.

Nice looking coin, and some beautiful photographs. Looks like a great deal of fun. I have assisted an archaeological dig once. It was a time consuming (I wanted to just dig the targets!), but very interesting and informative, and taught me to keep good records of what I have found where.

Cheers,

Buck

Thanks Buck! Yes sometimes it's really boring with them. Otherwise you can detect sites you never could without them. Good thing is that i can dig almost everything because the layer i work will be removed in their next step before they really start excavating. They remove the top soil to get a picture where to start/be careful and where's seemingly nothing.

at least they get a detectorist when digging around...here in the states.....forget it....Id probably do it for free.....if they would let me....

Good to see you're getting out Lu. Do you have to give that "modern" stuff back?

Hi Tim! :hello: Sure do i give them all that trash! I have buckets full at home. They can scrabble about....and look if there is something more to find.

It only works good because it's a private company who does the digging. State archies are way more difficult to handle.

wow thats awesome .wish i worked for a archeological company
