I was walking what I think is a old srage trail when I came to what looked like a telegraph pole that was spilntered and halved down to the ground, maybe 2 ft standing out of the ground. My Eurotech [not -pro model}went off crazy around the stump. i ended up digging a pocket of spikes. Not sure if they are railroad, telegraph, mineing or others. Can anyperson help with I.D., thanks in advance. _DSC1786.JPG

I would guess they are off the telegraph pole, used to climb the pole.

With reservations, although you are probably right. How long are they? There would need to be at least 6 inches out of the pole. I rode the original transcontinental
telegraph line for several miles in Nevada, looking for rams horn insulators. Didn't find any. What part of Nevada are you in? I was near Fallon.

They look like railroad spikes to me.

They are 4 inches long. I dug them up East of Goodsprings,Nv. I did not get them all. Looks like they were dumped and buried. I did not notice any railroad tracks, but they could be there under sand. The road where I found rhem crisscrosses with other road, all dirt roads off the grid.

I say RR spikes They are too short and the wrong shape for telegraph pole spikes.
Cheers

Defiantly a track spike from a smaller pound mine rail most likely. I pick those things up here and there and even picked up one from the old transcontinental railroad grade around Oasis Nev. I pondered over the Chinaman who most likely pounded it in a tie so long ago. I wondered about what he was hoping and dreaming to get out of that hard work he was doing back in 1869. At this link you can still buy a variety of track spike sizes from A & K Rail. They're a major supplier of rail to private spurs, mining companies & major RR companies. (see page 43) Digital Catalog | A&K Railroad Materials, Inc.. This is a pick of two of the ones I found from various places I look around. I put em in a flower pot out on the back porch.

Lots of mining in that area, no doubt for mine rails.

have you ever walked the stage line (pony express line) through Stagecoach?

No, Stagecoach is on hiway 50 west of Silver Springs. The ranch I worked for was off 395 alternate. The telegraph went from Fort Churchill east across the ranch to Hooten Well,
which was a pony express station. It's 18 miles from 395 out to Hooten Well which was the back end of the ranch, the Fallon bombing range was just over the hill. Anyhow, I took
a saddle horse and followed the stumps of the telegraph poles to Hooten Well. I was looking for surface finds. I had a BFO detector and tried it a little at Hooten Well, with no luck what
so ever. You'd get the idea the place had been a dump, and that machine couldn't handle the trash --- or perhaps it was just me, but I gave up. Oh yeah, the hill I mentioned would
be the Dead Camel mountains. I was there in the 60's and the navy was doing a lot of practice bombing, killing rattle snakes and jack rabbits, then sending those boys to Viet Nam, I
guess to continue killing snakes, this isn't the political forum, so I won't say anything more.
Now I've been told the SEALS desert train out there, and prospectors and treasure hunters aint zactly welcome.

I forgot, when I lived there I met a fellow that said there is a spring around Stagecoach, or perhaps a little further west, and he found a cap and ball pistol metal detecting that spring,
which back then made me envious as heck.

Lyon county, Washoe, Storey ...Reno...Carson...Tahoe...in the 60's was a magic part of the world that if you weren't there then you have no idea what you missed. I have hunted all around that area and even today find it pretty amazing.

I agree totally. There was no speed limit, between Dayton and Silver Springs I was doing 85 plus, and a stater passed me and disappeared out of sight on that flat straight away. I loved
it, a man could pick anyway he wanted to go to Hell, and it was legal in those days. If anyone saw The Misfits, staring Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe, the wild horses were chased on
Break-a-heart flat, a large salt flat off hiway 50 between Dayton and Silver Springs.
