Just find Kankakee City, (not the present town of Kankakee), and turn right and whistle.
Your talking 1870's or so.
I got interested in Shermanville years ago in a round about way.?
I was searching for the old Channahon graveyard. on the road between Elwood,
(you will find some records calling it Elmwood), and the Grundy County line bridge.
This cemetery was said to have covered a "large area";? old records show it was
abandoned; vandals took over, headstones and grave markers knocked down; last
info shows it only measured 18 X 30 feet or so with the small road running through it.? Blodgett Road needed improvements
in late 1960's and what was left was paved over.
But I digress.....
Shermanville, Shermanville, Shermanville.
If your looking for it, I hope you did some checking on Kankakee City, (again, not the
present location of Kankakee), both towns, (Kankakee City and Shermanville), were
in the same general area.
Kankakee City may have been a land scam.? Fellow by the name of John Kinnear,
(Kennare?), was involved.? Cannot locate but there was said to be an article in the Joliet Evening
Herald News in 1936, described the historical scandal.? City was founded in 1833, gone by 1835.
But I digress.
Shermanville, Shermanville, Shermanville.
While working on the Channahon graveyard I became interested in Shermanville.
Shermanville was built near the old Kankakee City site, around 1871.? It was said to
be named Shermanville because it was involved with the quarry of limestone from pits
for Chicago after the Chicago fire.? Contracts were made to supply stone for the
"Sherman House" in Chicago.? The stone at first was good but later it started to
contain large amounts of iron and would show rust stains, which was not good.
Town had a post office; general merchandise store run by a C.E.Fowler and a
George B. Cook.? Store lasted less then a year.
You may know that the entire area is quarry area, woods, homes, the rivers.
I enjoy hunting areas where I can find something and date it to something that
happened in the area in the past.? Finding Shermanville was, (is), one of my small
adventures.? To date, I must report no success, (but have had a good time looking.)
Picked up some scrap and things but no tie in with Shermanville.

General area:
Where the Kankakee and Des Plaines Rivers meet; Across the river from the old
McKinley Woods, near the old Illinois and Michigan canal; old branch of the Illinois
Central RR; south side of river near mile 274.
I have not been able to tag any specific area with the town. Wish you the best of luck
