Hi All, I was sorting through some accumulated pocket change today and found a 1999 Delaware state quarter (D mint mark) that seems to have suffered some unusual damage at the mint. The obverse side has a pretty severe circular bulge exactly the same diameter as a dime. Under magnification, the edge of the bulge appears to show imprints of the rim serrations found on a dime. The reverse side is slightly concave, again, the same diameter as a dime. It's unusual in that the indentation only occurs at the edge of object that caused the indentation. The lettering and other features of the quarter on either side (obverse/reverse) are only slightly distorted........not flattened as they would be if the coin was intentionally hammered by someone. Really weird and hard to describe. Anyone have any ideas?

To me it looks like post mint damage, it looks like someone put it in a press or a vice with a socket or something like that.

I suppose anything is possible.....your guess is as good as mine. It's odd that the depression is exactly the same as the OD of a dime. I'd think there would be some deformation (i.e., potato chipping & flattening) of the rim of the quarter if a press or vice were used as you suggest. Who knows? Thanks for the comment.

Definitely post mint damage. Impossible to say just how it happened, may have been hit with something like the end of a piece of pipe, who knows. I once saw a guy put a nickel under a brass fitting and tighten it in to plug a hole, it left the nickel looking something like this afterwards. The main thing is that there is no way in the minting process it could have happened.

Most definitely damaged after it left the mint. Not a guess.

Interesting pics. I'm going to guess it was post mint damage as well. May have been in a high impact while associated with a dime. Car wreck or something similar?

Thank you all for your comments and help. Guess it won't be supplementing my social security income....LOL!
