Re: Define "spill"

for me it would be 3 or more, and usually of different denominations. Does that sound right to you guys & gals out there?!?

Got that right!! Love it when I hear the clang of multible coins in my scoop!!

Re: Define "spill"

To me a spill would be 2 or more loss coins in the same or within inches of each other whereas a cache would be stacked together or in a container.

Good point, since only so many coins could be "spilled", and after that they would have to be considered cached.

I did find 6-8 (didn't count) clad in one hole last week, I considered that as a "spill".

Re: Define "spill"

I say 3. I found spills of 5 and 6. But 3 seems a good number.

Re: Define "spill"

I don't know if I've seen any definition of a spill, but I would say 3 or more. I've found up to 17 (16 pennies and 1 nickel) as my highest coin total in one hole and 98 cents (3 quarters, 2 dimes and 3 pennies) as my highest dollar total.

Like your definition Stoney! I have found upwards of 12 - 14 coins in general proximity to each other, mostly pennies though. My biggest single scoop was 3 -$1 coins!! ;D

Re: Define "spill"

I have found a good number of spills, but what do you call finding a roll of wheaties with the paper tube in one hole. I found it in an old high school front yard near a flag pole. Best I can figure is it was dropped during the spring when the ground was muddy during a fair or something of the sort and stepped on. To just lay there in the snow or on top of the ground it wouldn't last long without a new owner.

Re: Define "spill"

1 1/3 coins is the official definition from
the 5th edition, "Third Book Of The Shermanville
Cronicles."

Also it should be noted that the "spill" must come
out from the top of of pocket and, "would not be
considered a spill," if the pocket had a hole in it
and the coins exited the pocket from the hole.

all have a good un.......

Re: Define "spill"

I would also consider a spill about three coins minimum or more. I don't think that they would need to be of different denominations though. I found one spill that had 5 quarters in the sand. This weekend I found about $2.00 in clad from a spill in the sand. She must have been doing her nails as I found a fake one with the coins that included mostly quarters a couple of dimes one nickel and a penny, plus her kids toy Thomas the Train engine.

Re: Define "spill"

I know it sounds morbid , but I often wonder when some folks
find several old coins and relic's in one spot if maybe a person
had died there and the body and clothes decayed leaving just the
metal . :P
would that be called a spill or a kill ? ;D

Yuk. Funny, but gross.

I think a spill should be two coins or more. What if they only had two coins in their pocket at the time?? If you found them in the same hole, they should certainly count as a "spill." Of course, they may have had only one coin in their pocket at the time, but we'd never know if it was a pocket spill or not, since most of the coins we dig are single coins. So I'd have to say two or more.

Re: Define "spill"

I'd say 2 minimum for a spill (losing more than one coin at the same time from a shirt pocket by bending over or from falling out a pants pocket while doing something )-- 3 is seems to be the minimum for some folks ---since 2 is rather small amount--- I can understand 3 as a minimum to some folks. but 2 is the minimum to me.
