Well... I really wanted to give that piece of equipment a good review. I was thrilled when I got it since it seemed very well built and ergonomic. It also performed very well in the field.

Then one day, after just two weeks of use, without any reason it just stopped working. It started behaving completely erratically, beeping when you touch it, when you don't touch it, when you put it down, when you pick it up, and sometimes just when you look at it. It has not been abused in any way. It has not been dropped, not been submerged, not been exposed to vibrations etc.

I live in the EU and couldn't phone Garrett, so I wrote two e-mails to [email protected]. No answer in 5 days. Then I managed to find the e-mail of one of their managers and sent an inquiry to it also. No answer. So I think it is only fair to post this and to warn other potential buyers that although this thing seems very nice, it may betray them.

Here is the video (btw. the duct tape is there only to mute the speaker):

Your covered by the warranty. Give it back to where you got it. Or send it to Garrett. Since your out of the country you emails may be blocked as spam. Garrett is very fair and will take care of your problem. First remove the duct tape and try it.

I am in Europe and I ordered it online from the US. Sending it to Garrett would cost me at least about one half of what I already payed for this thing.

Being out of the country means that my emails will be blocked as spam??? :o :o :laughing7: ;D ;D

The duct tape has nothing to do with this. It has already been removed. The pointer is just not working.

I am not posting this as a way of retaliation or with the hope to hear from Garrett at all, btw. I just want to warn people that this product may not be as reliable as advertised. It is still new and we really have no way of knowing if it has potential issues. Mine has.

Since you bought it from another country other than your own then you already knew about the cost of warranty issues. It's not Garrett's fault that shipping will be costly to you. You will have to ship it to the factory and I'm sure they will send you another one. Just as I would if I purchased from your country. Maybe a kind letter to Garrett about your product could net you some free goodies. But posting a warning will get you nothing. You don't know if your emails are blocked? Why can't you call Garrett? Yes, it will cost you some money to call but why don't you try? They might just simply send you another pinpointer? If after you make a confirmed contact to Garrett with no success on your problem than that's when you can gripe about your issue. I would even call Garrett myself and tell them to call you if that will help? Just PM me your phone number and I'll do it. I don't know how many Propointers have been sold to date. I'm sure it's a lot. There have been very few problems with them. Even a $100,000 Mercedes will have warranty issues.

Khouse, I know you write with good intentions and I appreciate your offer. Phone call was not an option for me because I live in the mountains and have only a cell phone, which is really very expensive for an overseas call.

Anyway, I finally received a response from Garrett. They say that they are looking into this. I have already decided to buy a new probe from another manufacturer, but we will see what will happen.

Sorry you had problems. I know you will get it resolved now that you've made contact with the mother ship.

I removed the video for now since Garrett did offer a free replacement unit. In the same time I noticed a comment on YouTube saying that another user has similar problems with his unit. I really hope these are isolated cases though and if the new unit they send me proves to be working well, I will probably remove this topic from here.

Geko,
I had the same eratic problems with mine and I was told to send it in and they would send me a replacement.
Did just what I was asked and recieved a new one within a couple of weeks of them receiving my faulty one.

They are a good company to work with. I sent an email to them on a Sunday and received a reply before I had made it to work the next morning.

Good Luck and HH

Well... something quite funny happened. I had written about this issue at the http://treasurehunterforum.com forum. I just went there to post that Garrett are trying to fix this and I found out that in the meantime my topic was deleted. Then I looked around and realized that that forum is probably owned by Garrett, or at least heavily sponsored by them. Anyway, censoring posts about such issues is a very weird way to uphold a reputation. :hello2:

There may be a few Pro Pointers out there that has something wrong with them but no matter what you buy that was manufactured you always have that chance of getting a bad one , be it a car , washer, dryer , coffee maker , ect. so you see you can always get a bad one no matter what it is........................BUT GARRETT will always make it right for you..........And in my book this Garrett Pro Pointer is the best Pinpointer i ever had...............

I was thinking the same as the post that said take off the duct tape as it may have a metalic componet. I have the pro Pointer. It has been nothing short of a life saver. Has cut recovery time to a minimum. I have delt with Garretts and have nothing but good to say about their response time. The pointer that I have is first class. wish you the best do not give up on this very fine tool. HHHH
