Recent storms uprooted some really big old oak trees around where I was working today. I wasn’t allowed to fire up my saw until 10am so I poked around a 200 year old fallen oak tree. The root ball left a 5 to 6 foot hole and I found this iron hook dead center at the bottom about a foot down (so six feet under the tree). It looks as it has a rivet to swivel and would have guided a leather strap............ I think, I’m always wrong, so I won’t speculate. image.jpg

Civil war sword hanger is my first instinct but I may be wrong.

The sight I found it on is an old house/tavern location from the 1700’s, but the tree was several hundred feet from the buildings location, and in Massachusetts

Looks a lot like, however, it has a rivet for at the rectangular guide for movement. The depth bewilders me, thanks Bowinkle

Ok lets get technical...

Its actually a "strap snap hook".

Also used on military sacks and various other things... even down to life vests.

:nono: Well ..to be precise... it is an articulated strap snap hook ... as opposed to a swivel type :tongue3:

Let's just say that it has been used for many years in multiple applications and it is still called a snap hook:notworthy:
