decorative toilet pull?

Found on the northeast corner of 401 and 540 in Raleigh, Nc.
Anyone know how to tell brass from gold besides the controlled melting point of copper and gold.

Crusader thanks for yours and everyones input so far.

Gold was used as a base metal before the turn of the century as my attached photo reveals, but unfortunately i can`t find the link to the article that says brass and gold were heated and rolled into a base metal for jewelry in the northeast of the US continent.
This bracelet was guessed by me to be 125yrs. old.


I do have tons of pics if anyone wants more.
