I'm thinking it might be a drum on front. Any chance this is a rev war breast plate?

That's exactly what I was thinking when I saw it. Took a spin through "Insignia of Independence" and did not see anything but your plate resembles an Officer's Plate in shape and color.

What does the back look like?

I'm not familiar with Civil war items, but I believe some breastplates were oval, and that does look like a drum on the front, a picture of the back would perhaps help in this ID.

I see my post crossed with the same question as Dug.

I never claim to know more than the next person, but the etching and style makes me think it predates the CW.
Here's a few more..

Thanks for your inputs fellas. It's a tough one since I do so little colonial hunting. I scored a few beauty little colonial buckles. One they call batwings I think. Anyways, I'll post them in the next few days.

Thanks again

I can't see were there were any attachments on the back, I wonder if it could be the back to a oval mirror.

Cool whatever it is, but I think you might have it upside down. My only guess on the design would be a mitre. (common design on livery buttons) There's also misc. crowned things, usually using a fairly unofficial looking crown. I have seen a couple plates in the past with livery type designs, so that is where my guess would be. Not sure exactly what they were for, or how they were used, but they do exist.

Here's a thread to show what I'm talking about. Note the 2nd one shown... ""Don Troiani has id'd it as a personal coat of arms plate.c.1790-1810"

Thanks for the interesting info and insight Dug, SS, Iron Patch. Very helpful.
I know a middle belt plate w drum is nothing but wishful thinking. Keep on mind the other artifacts (attached). Crusader put the bottom buce at 1550-1650. Hopefully I'll find out something and update the group.

IP is correct. You have it upside down. I definitely see the ducal crown with an animal emerging from it. Similar to this:

I also believe the age is mid to late 18th C.

Possibly a horse decoration?

Cool find, whatever it is.

yep, I'd say. I ruled out miter seeing better pics on his other post, but I think you're on the right track with that.
