Spent a great day in the fields, woods, and a small dump looking for random targets.

My nicest find was a half inch diameter tombac button with a sharp design on it that reminds me of a sylised maple leaf or a snowflake. The button was located near a stone wall, about 10 feet from a stream. The shank was intact but so brittle that it dried out and crumbled after cleaning.

My second nicest find is a decorative metal piece that has a nice vine design and was part of something larger. I have no idea what it is.

Oh, and the ticks were out in full force. :BangHead: Spent the next day in Urgent Care to have one removed from my back.

Thanks for Looking!
Nick

Nice finds, like the bottles too!!

Thank you, Colonial Digger. The bottles were dug at the site of an abandoned road where a bridge once stood since Colonial times. Most of the finds in this little trash dump are from the 1930s.

Nice finds, Wildcat. I went to urgent care last Fall after digging a deeply imbedded tick out of my thigh. I took out quite a divot in my attempt to completely remove all traces. The doctor was actually more concerned with my self-mutilation than she was with the tick bite. She said that as long as the tick is removed within 48 hours of biting, there isn’t a need for further medical treatment, as it takes that long for the infectious stuff to be transmitted. She also said that, since I dug so deep in an effort to remove it, she’d give me doxycycline just to be safe.

But you sure are right about the ticks being out in force. When I get out of the woods I usually stand outside my car for a few minutes to pick them off my clothes. Even then, I’ll look down a few minutes later and see them scrambling around. The real fun starts when my wife spots one hours after I get home.:BangHead:

I’ve tried a lot of different tick sprays but none of them seem to be very effective.

Nice tombac. Those engraved buttons are a favorite find of mine. I don't want to jink myself, but I rarely find a tick on me as after being in the woods all day as slong as I use Deep Woods Off.

Wow that’s a pretty tombac!! I rarely find them with fancy, great job brother!!

Nice!!! Congrats!!

Nice engraved tombac. I have found quite a few, mostly spiral geometric patterns like yours. But recently I found one with a sheath of wheat engraved.

Great button! I love the engraved tombacs. They're pretty rare around our area. I've only ever found a couple of broken ones.

I guess it's an occupational hazard for us, dts. They gave me 1 double dose of doxy and did an excellent job of removal. I usually do it myself if I can reach it. Usually leave something behind then it itches like crazy. No itching this time. I was picking them off my lap and throwing them out the car window all the way home.

Thanks Silver Tree Chaser. I was quite surprised to see a design when I cleaned it up! BTW this was really the first tick for me this season. I use Deep Woods Off but apparently the ticks in my neck of the woods don't seem to mind it...:laughing7:

This is definitely one of my best, Joe-Dirt. Thanks!

Nice!!! Congrats!!
Thanks, Digger RJ!

Thank you, Steve in PA. It didn't occur to me that they were in engraved until I started reading the comments...

Thanks, Lost Signal. Even without the engraving I love finding tombacs. They clean up so well out of the ground!

Ha ha. I know what you mean about throwing them out of the car window, Wildcat. When there are people driving behind me they must wonder what the heck I’m doing. They probably think that whatever I appear to be throwing out is strictly imaginary and that I’m a recent escapee from one of our “re-education facilities” here in CT. Then again, there have been times when I show strangers my finds for the day consisting of bottle caps, pull tabs, flattened beer cans and broken glass - they’re convinced I’m completely insane (they may be right).

I know what you mean about the tick parts that are left in. I had one in the back of my neck last week and my wife did her squeamish rendition of surgery, leaving some of the pieces in... itched like crazy for 4 or 5 days and made a big hard bump. Fortunately it was a big dog tick - they carry only about half the diseases that the deer ticks and lone-star ticks do.

The way this year has been going, we’ll have killer hornets here in the Spring.
