I'm not really a big fan of the UK treasure law, I think it's got flaws that need ironing out, But this was a find that is not very valuble, but very interesting, and it needed more research.
I found this a few weeks back on a field I have hunted many times, only quite small in length (less than 3 inches) it's also incomplete and (damaged) triangular in shape. It's made of Silver and has script on two sides, the outher side has carved animals and a flower.

The item dates to the Medieval period and was possibly a spoon, as all the sides were meant to be viewed, I doubt that it was something that would have been worn. I knew that the Museum would be interested, because finding items with script is quite rare, especially Silver items. So I duly declared it to the local Museum (York) sent them pictures and a email and the following week down and gave it to the liason officer.

She told me that the British museum had showed a great interest and were looking forward to having it sent to them. The remaining script on one side of the piece would have read if complete... “ARENVS REX”.
When complete this would probably have read IESVS NAZARENVS REX IVDEORVM (Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews) which appears frequently on medieval rings and brooches and was used for its amuletic power. This suggests that the object dates to the 13th or 14th century.

Interesting piece, I like the Lion but what is it facing? Can't make it out:icon_scratch: (another animal)

I love to find pieces that have historical value, this artifact you have found is really interesting. I would love to hear what the experts finally identify it as.

Nice find SS....I envy the history you have on that side of the pond to search for.....:icon_thumleft:

I can imagine how hard it is to let go of things found which are pretty unique. You get finds like these once in a lifetime. And it is tough having to wait through the vetting process. It almost makes it seem like it's lost again when they get it to determine value. But I guess you can see it in perpetuity when it gets placed in the museum. I am sure all finds and 'treasure' are not displayed but one would hope this is. Nice find no matter what.

Thanks:icon_thumleft: the likely out come of this find would proberbly be I get it returned, I don't think realy think it will have much value:dontknow: being that it is incomplete, and it certainly won't be on public display, more likely tucked away in a box to be studied, when required. I will proberbly donate it for study.:hello:

Great find. Even though you may not be fond of your treasure trove laws, they are better than here. In the US the gov't can just lay claim on any find of historic significance, with no compensation. For that reason, nothing is reported, causing animosity between metal detecting hobbyists and the archaeological community.

Great find mate:icon_thumright:, my vote is dragleopliony thingy:dontknow:. Whatever it is, it's bloody good to see you posting again. I might even go out detecting tomorrow to celebrate:laughing7:, and post my finds for once.
