Decided to hunt some coins again, banks here suck

Hi, I decided I wanted to collect some coins again. I do live within walking district of 4 different banks. I wanted to hunt halves and decided to run my paycheck through them. Well I went to my local branch and asked about halves, they didn't have any but OFFERED to order me boxes every tuesday and they'd be there thursdays. They also didn't have any other quantities of coins but would be more than happy to order me whatever i need. They also said their source is the fed. I ordered 1 box. The rest of the banks i don't have accounts with. I went to 2 other banks on my way home and they all said the same thing basically. Ok, kinda lame but i guess they don't do much business with coins.

The next day I had to take my car by the shop to have the computer read and I decided to call some banks in the area to ask about halves as I've seen others report success doing this. No luck. I decided to drop by some various banks and try to get a box of dimes to sort through and was told i needed to have an account with BofA to get that many dimes. Then they basically told me to go. Found a dump bank for sure. Went to another branch of chase and they offered me what they could spare in dimes, and they didn't ask about an account. The teller even bagged $100 in machine and cwr dimes in plastic and then a chase bag. Went to another small bank and they were willing to give me up to $100 without an account there, also a mix of mwr and cwr dimes. They would have given me more if i have an account and are offering a free account. I think i need to open up some accounts to make dumping and buying coin easier. Any tips?

Wow, i just opened and looked at the rolls, and it looks like most of the "cwr" are mwr that were opened on one end and then put back. Will update with results when i'm done searching.

am wondering what bank was willing to order?

ehh i should go to bofa to get dimes i guess then...

gl on the dimes...

ok, well one of the machine wrapped rolls produced a 1948 dime. Where do you get the clear wrapped dimes? paper wrappers are tough. Now i need to dump these coins somewhere.

I will strongly suggest that you figure out where you are going to dump before you buy more coin.

Trust me on that one. I was in the same boat once.

Typically, buying is not the problem...it is the dumping that is tough in this hobby.

Clear rolls come from brinks. Around here banks won't tell me who their coin suppliers are, I just have to pay attention to what kind of rolls I get at each bank, and I know it's brinks, string, or whatever. Around my area, you can get Brinks from BofA or Wells Fargo.

Best of luck
HH

Thanks for the tips. I managed to dump the dimes at one of the braches I got it from. This arroused a little suspicion from the teller and her manager. I was hoping to get a different teller than the one i got them from, but no luck. They asked if i got them from the bank, i said a few banks and added I was collecting coins and searched them all and found just one date I was looking for. Said I was looking for a mercury dime and the teller was kinda surprised to hear that we used to have dimes with a greek god on them. I apparently also just missed some large dollar coins.

So, would it be bad form to order halves from one bank, then dump them to another bank in exchange for dimes, then dump the dimes for halves?

A couple of hints that will help you out long-term:
**It's all about relationships.
**Just don't dump where you pick up! It WILL work a couple of times, it WONT work long term. Why? Because banks are crafty in not directly telling you no. Tellers talk to each other and the manager, so even if you didn't get the same teller, they will see that box of dimes returned into the branch again. Manager will simply say, "tell the dime dude we dont have any boxes when he comes back, or there will be a fee for an additional." etc etc
**Finding a good dump bank is hard, make it a priority though. If the teller gets stressed out over $200 in dimes...probably not the best dump bank. If you see a bank that has 25 of those green $100 dime holders...probably means they deal with a ton of coin. Use them to dump.

These are just the basics, but a solid foundation is key. Develop good habits now, because banks won't forget you. It's hard to get good service in this business after you piss them off. Good luck, free advice is what it is, but it's worked for me!!
