I think you may be right on with the screw, I have found one or two as well and thought the same thing. Other similar screws I've found have the hole partially through the ball or head, these I figure are from furniture pulls.
All in all you're getting some decent finds from your site, keep up the good work!

I've sure found my fair share of screws! :laughing7:
But certainly none have been as nice as that musket trigger screw!

Nice finds romeo!

is there a hole in the top(knob part)?

Seems a bit thick, but the hole, or lack there of, I'd guess would be the deciding factor.

So thats what they are musket trigger screw,s i have a few of those in a box somewhere found over the years good hunt Jim

The ones on the lock plates in your photos would be iron. Yours is brass. It is a drawer pull piece from a Georgian era piece of furniture.

Buck

Ahhh...there's the rub. It is brass. Were all top jaw screws iron?

Sure looks like one to me. I say we have a competition see who can be the first on TN to collect enouph musket parts to build one out of parts. To the winner a new XP Deus, what to you say Mods can you make it happen??

I read that the Royal Marines muskets had alot of brass parts so the salt water didn't rust them up. A diving buddy has found two musket stocks with most the parts still intact and they had a lot of brass parts.

If it was a hammer screw it would definitely be iron not brass, it takes a lot of torque to hold the flint in place and brass would strip too easily. None of the mechanical parts on a muzzleloading firearm would be brass, just the fittings like buttplate ,sideplate, triggerguard, etc.

Yes the top jaw screws were iron. Every one I've ever seen that was still a part of the lock plate. I used to think that was what they were too.
