Re: Dead Man's Cave

Mona island have a dead man cave too. Some people said that this island is the dead man island.

Re: Dead Man's Cave

Guess that name is pretty common, huh? :-\

Apparently what happened was these three prospectors were caught in a snow storm, and saw an opening in the side of a cliff. Apparently the opening was small, but they managed to get in. It opened up into a larger cavern and they found 5 skeletons on the ground. They started exploring and found some gold bars. They each took one as proof and headed into town. The newspapers documented the whole thing. From here on you know the rest of the story -- couldn't find their way back, gold never found, etc. Still, it would be interesting to see if the place actually existed, if only just to give the poor skeletons a proper burial.... :(

Lost Desert Rose Mine

One of my ancestors, who lived in the late 1880s Tucson, found a very rich, pure gold in Rose Quartz, Gold Mine!
Over a period of time, several months...
He and his partner brought in several loads, later on, they were both killed by Indians !
The mine has never been found!
I have looked, field researched (family clues, etc.) and etc.. over the past few yrs!
I believe that I can now, get into a close, but! general area!
Anyone interested in continuing the search,
Which is, (the area) Well! North of Tucson, (NO! Not The Catalina Mnts!) when I pick up the Trail/search again this fall?

Re: Dead Man's Cave

I'm familiar with the story, I hope to be able to look for it in one of my upcoming adventures but its been raining in the mountains almost everyday for a month! It is an interesting story but I question the validity of it as well.

Re: Dead Man's Cave

Well CC, if you do happen upon it, at least send me a pic or two, okay? :)

I wish we lived closer to the "action" as far as treasure hunting is concerned, but what can ya do? Just take more vacations, I guess! ;)

Re: Dead Man's Cave

when i lived in calif,i went to a old tourist attraction ghost town,me an some friends went exploring outside of the town an found a cave that we found out later that was named"dead mans cave" we found out why.it was a old mine.we only went in 50 feet,we had no lights.had we gone further in like 100 feet we would have never got out of there alive.at 100 feet the floor of the cave dropped straight down 500 feet or more.many unsuspecting people met thier deaths in the cave walking along and falling into the hole.we were surprised that the cave wasnt blocked off.

Re: Dead Man's Cave

There's a nice write up about Dead Man's Cave in Colorado Treasure Tales by W.C. Jameson. He puts it southwest of Pueblo in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. I recommend picking up a copy of the book. Good luck!

Re: Dead Man's Cave

Wow -- I didn't think this post was still around!

As luck would have it, I did get that book and another by Jameson for Christmas. ;D The worst thing about reading those kinds of things is that it's the middle of winter and there's 8 inches of snow on the ground. Yeah, cabin fever has set in... I can't wait until the spring thaw so I can get out and look for some of this stuff!!

Gold Seeker:
That's what winters are/is "For" !
You do the research and then,
In the "Spring" you hit the Trail !
I know that I was very fortunate..
(see my reply to "Hill Billy", "RE: Need Help")
But!
you won't find what you don't get out and look for!
Find one treasure and fully research it!
Then, when you have ALL! of the information ...
Concentrate on finding just this one!
I spent two yrs on my "Tampa Bay Find!"
AND!
I know of two other TH'ers, who spend a like time, MD'ing an island, south of Ft. Myers.
But!
They TOO!, did find $$$$ ! ;D what they were after!
Just by coincidence, we moved to NM!
Where we happened to meet !

Re: Dead Man's Cave

During my research on The Tampa Bay Site,
I came across TWO! more, VERY interesting treasures sites!
This is, of course, common!
Both are in The State of Florida
One is extremely Rare ( Even for treasures) & Very, Unique !
The Other one is!
HUGE!

I would estimate, one of the largest ever, in the U.S. !
Ranking right alongside, Montezuma's Treasure!

Re: Dead Man's Cave

Hey Cptbil!

You're right. I need to focus on just one... but man, is it hard! :-\ There are two here close to Omaha that I would love to look for, and have done some research on. One I'm not sure if it is even "real" and more of a tall tale -- the locations in all the stories cannot possibly be right. The other, well, maybe the same way. But I won't know until I do more research. Lately I've been focusing more time on Colorado and South Dakota. I have a couple of people at work that are dying to go -- somewhere. We don't care where, just want to get out of Omaha for a while. It's been a miserable January, and it only sounds like it's gonna get worse.

Would love to hear about your research! I have no plans to go to Florida, so anything you share would end with me. All the best in your searching!

Re: Dead Man's Cave

Gold Seeker!
I'm not going to or even am I in, Florida ! (I was! at one time)
I have just come across, various treasure leads while researching!
I'm afraid that because of the Size of the ONE!

The Big One! In Florida,[
AND!
It IS! HUGE! :o ( AND! Completely authentic/provable! )

I can't reveal ANYTHING About it!

Some day, I may find a Partner(s) (Or! Get a "team" togather) and go !

OneBora
& GoldSeeker :
If the weather ever gets settled down, I will be on the trail(s)!
I am hoping for MAY!
I am though going out and being caught by a Blizzard!
TWICE is enough!
I lived though one in the "Black Range Mbts" of NM (7500') !
In a camp, That was five hours off the road!
AND!
One nasty one, in Western Colo.
The clouds rolled in, over a 9000' pass, as a huge black wall!
In less than 30 minutes we were TOTALLY! snowed in!

Luckily, I go fully prepared !
I carry, US Military Arctic Parkas/gloves
I have sleeping bags that will fit inside of each other ...
Total, Cold weather clothes/suits, etc ...
I don't know which of the blizzards, was worst!
The NM one..
OR!
THe One in Colo !
I got photos of the snow blowing horizontal !
Almost,
or!
It was! a "white out" !
Luckily I was up there, Colorado, with just me and my dog!
::) Luckily ??? ???
Because, no one else goes as prepared for COLD !
One Time, I had a friend, show up in camp, in a north/south running canyon in Arizona, in the winter, with his regular sleeping bag..
Which JUST! Happened to be! A SUMMER SLEEPING BAG! >:(
Heck!
We had water freeze in camp every day!
Luckily, I had/have five sleeping bags or "John" (who lives in Phoenix) would have frozen !
My Motto !
"Think of the worst possible situtation ..
THEN! Double that!

Re: Dead Man's Cave

BUT!
If you'd like, we can arrange to talk over a trip on the Phone !
AS!
I have three, "Hot" Ones,
All! Three are,
WAY! South of Tucson !
One of which, I hope to "Recovery" on this trip !
Two are of Silver,
One is of gold and attached mine!
It's an actual Spanish, intact & Lost Mission & Gold Mine/cache
You won't need MDs on these trips!
BUT! GUNS !
SI! :-\
Muy! Muy! SI! :P
