Day 4 Part A - Barley Field 2 - SILVER Day & 100 Roman scrappies!

I'm on my own this weekend.

Spent 3 hours in the burning sun before my ice water ran out & decided I would go back later when its cooler. Therefore I will post part B later.

Did well today;
Silver Hammered of Edward I 1280s - Hammered no.15 for the year.
1 Scrappy roman which makes 100 this year. I think we are well on target to make the 300 by the end of the year.
Silver sixpence 1818
Silver Shilling 1927
Splash silver blob from ancient metal working.
1653 token
Neolithic Flint
Broken Medieval lead seal matrix.

Found a strange natural slab of iron :icon_scratch:

Good news is this is only one of our average fields. Better to follow 8)

HAMMERED SILVER!!!

You've been certainly having some Great hunts lately. Celtic Gold, Hammered Silver, and up to 100 Romans now. I'd say that's a FINE year already!!

I know things were slow for a while for you--but that's the nature of the hobby...I always see it like this: When finds are slow, I'm overdue for a Great Find.

Well done, and BRAVO.

I'm never worried when things are slow, but Dad is a little impatient. I know this is going to be our BEST year EVER!!

Great hunt Crusader! I love those finds, what a variety. Is that "flint" obsidian? Obsidian is a volcanic glass and was considered the sharpest material known until recently, even sharper than a steel scalpel. If so do you know the origin of the obsidian? Is it found in the UK? Again, thanks for the great posts...Ryan

We have a HUGE obsidian beds in Utah, and you will find obsidian in Indian camps hundreds of miles from where it is naturally found. Indians traded them and apparently had extensive trade routes with other tribes and groups judging by the incredible dispersion of obsidian. They made for spear and arrowhead material, and I have found chippings of obsidian in every corner of Utah.

Some of the best black flint nodules travelled great distances as well.

The more I post, the luckier I feel. We have got it good, but compared to what I have seen in North Norfolk I'm just wasting my time :D Still love every minute of it

Congratulations on your magic finds..I'm in Italy, and expect some great finds. I was wondering if you can tell me at what depths (inches) you find the Roman era stuff. I need to upgrade my machine, it's a Garrett GTAx550, but seems to stay at the 3-5 inch level, and nothing older than 1900 comes out. Your Cortes might be what I'm looking for..Which coil do you suggest? All the best.

Welcome to Tnet. My Uncle is Italian, but I have never tried detecting in Italy yet.

I always do ploughed fields so the roman coins are on the top. Sometimes I see them by eye. Depth is not an issue. If you are doing pasture/grass fields then I don't know any detecting that will find a 16mm bronze coin at 1.2ft deep (average soil build up since roman times). The Cortes is a great machine & I would not swap it for any other on the market but the top of the range Minelab goes much deeper.

If you do ploughed fields then the Cortes is excellent. If you do grass which has never been ploughed (some have in Medieval period) then the Cortes will only find 1700s.

Thank you CRUSADER...Wifey is the Italian. "If it ain't gold, don't bother showing it to me, and stop ruining the lawn!"
I, on the other hand, get a high from digging a piece of 'whatisit' iron..Though that is losing its sparkle, with so little "Wows" in between..Need to go deeper, I guess.. Best of Everything, and look forward for some more inspiration from your hunts.
