DAY 4 ON THE RIFLE RANGE..............SURPRISE FIND!!!

Only went out for 2 hours in the freezing fog.

Had lots of cartridges, only kept the good ones. Couple of bullets (pictured)

I have been unable to find any coinage or buttons so far to help me with my story. But strangely I had a Roman bronze coin only 4 inches in unploughed soil. The 1880 cartridges are over 6 inches deep.
The coin was very crusty & I immediately thought it was a Roman Silver & couldn't wait to clean it. (See the before shot)
When I cleaned it I was sad to see it was bronze. However I managed to identify it as:
AE4 (14mm)
THEODOSIVS I
Rev: VOT XV MVLT XX
Coin date: AD378-383
Mint: Rome

I have about 4 Theodosius I but none of this reverse type. So a good couple of hours really.

That's a great find...I wonder why it was so shallow...

So do I. The area was liable to flood so alot of sediment has built up & the Romans normally avoid these types of areas. Maybe the horses which the local cavalry used to bring down supplies churned it up??

I like those surprises! :)
