Daughter's first arrowhead, mangled 1861 half dime, and other civil war goodies.

My daughter found this arrowhead the other day while I was detecting. We would both love to know who crafted it, an approximate date, and what its made of. We live in Tennessee if that helps.

I found this mangled 1861 half dime about 30 feet away a day or two before.

Thought I'd show a few other Civil war items found not too long ago. I found these two clay marbles up against a 69 cal musket ball. I imagined kids playing marbles with daddy's bullets 100 plus years ago.

Here's some bullets, buttons, sword hanger, etc. If anybody can identify any of the iron items or small bullets it would be appreciated. Thanks for your help!

WOW!! Sweet finds and congrats to your daughter for finding her first arrowhead!

These two bullets look like some a friend sent me from Tennessee. He said they are .36 cal. CS revolver bullets. Sorry for the small picture but I don't know how to highlight them any other way.

I think those are known as confederate "tear" bullets...like .32 cals. Maybe these are different, but they look the same.

Nice point your daughter found. Post it on the Pre Colonial American Relic forum and the experts there can help you date it. Marbles are often found in Civil War camps, the soldiers actually played marbles in camp. I also like the Riflemans button you found and the sword hanger. I believe those teardrop bullets were used by both sides. I have found them in pre war US sites in Texas and I know they turn up frequently in Missouri.

based on the size of the point in your hand, it appears to be a spear point. really a cool find. I love arrowheads, but don't really know much about them as far as ID and age. I find a few here in Oklahoma from time to time and they make my day. here is a really great link if you have some time to invest for research...

Thanks! I wish I'd found one like that when I was 6. She hasn't stopped looking at the ground since.

I think you're right, it seems like I had read that they were .32 or .36 when I first found one a few years ago. There's a bullet that's even smaller there that I'm curious about, but I need to take a better picture of it. I think the lower pistol bullet is a .44 but I'm not sure about the other two.

Yeah, I think I've seen them referenced as "teardrop" bullets. I love the shape of them but the design just seems wrong for a bullet.

Thanks, she's very proud of it.
I posted it on that forum a little while ago and hope to get some leads soon. I never thought about soldiers playing marbles but that makes sense, thanks for the info!

I really appreciate this link! I've seen several that look similar, it may be much older than I suspected.

I appreciate the lead. Do you have any guesses as to the type?

Re: Daughter's first arrowhead, mangled 1861 half dime, and other civil war goodies.

Here are two ID's for some of the interesting bullets you dug. The one on the top right really interests me. Could you post better photos of the five with blue lines on them in my photo below? If you have something to give an accurate measurement of length, diameter, and weight, that would really help too...

Best Wishes,

Buckles

Re: Daughter's first arrowhead, mangled 1861 half dime, and other civil war goodies.

Those are all terrific finds.. The teardrop (st.louis arsenal) bullets that are in discussion are not strictly CS.. they are commonly recovered from union sites in the western theatre

too bad the dime found its way into a campfire, although it has a great deal of character

and the riflemans button is awesome :headbang:

Re: Daughter's first arrowhead, mangled 1861 half dime, and other civil war goodies.

Nice finds, now your daughter is going to be looking for many more, I sure like walking up on a finely crafted point or scraper. I've yet to find an axe head or any Civil War relics.

Here's a better picture of the bullets you marked. I don't have anything to give the measurements you requested but I hope to get the tool to at least measure the diameter soon.
I also included a tiny bullet that I'm curious about (far left) and a standard .57 (far right)for reference. Thanks for your help.

Thanks, everything else at the site seems to be union so that makes sense about the teardrops.
Yeah, the dime is really ugly but at least the date is legible. It's the only civil war era coin I've dug so I guess I'll take it.
