So my daughter likes to find rock by the river behind our house but this one really stuck out to me. I thought it might be a chunk of granite at first because of the color and weight. It's very heavy but broke open fairly easily, the brown dots on the outside are actually pinkish red crystals on the inside but it's weird that they are all very round. I will attach some pictures and would love to find out what this is so I can tell her.

Thank you everybody 900CD58B-D7D0-44B2-86EA-2F6B4D4CE16F.jpeg0C68F995-2904-41DB-9D38-5B72498F34EA.jpeg

It's Almandine garnets in matrix and an awesome specimen! That's a particularly dense aggregation and the water smoothing of the rock makes it particularly striking. Really good find!

Those are almandine garnets. It is not a granite. Lots of garnets occur in metamorphic rocks. What state are you in? That makes a difference in identification.

Nice find! That's a pretty cool looking rock! If you turn it sideways, it looks like a big rotten strawberry....lol

Gore Mountain, in NY has HUGE garnets of the same kind of occurrence.

Thank you everybody for helping me identify it. We broke some pieces off and ran it through a rock tumbler for a month to see what would happen but unfortunately it was way too soft and even the big pieces turned out smaller than a freckle. Some of the garnets fell out but they were so tiny we didn't keep them.

She found another really cool rock that I need help identifying. I'm going to make a new post for those and I can figure out how to link the post in here I will. I'm using my iPhone to post these so it may prove difficult.
