Dating points

Overstreet makes a really good book! Look up arrowhead catalog/price guide by overstreet it has everything broke down in different sections of the country.. and actual size photos for each point. Any type of point you find in your part of the country will be in that book

Thanks for the reference! I'll have to get that one. Do you know of a book that is centered around tools? If so, please tell me! Thanks friend.

The one I have is just points but they do have a tool one..I own it and its my bible

The only thing I like about Robert Overstreet is that he hunted a lot in the exact same spots I hunt. Same creeks same banks and fields. My Uncle knew and worked with him at Bowwater. He knew his local points. Things like the Tennessee River knifes and bradley spikes, mouse creeks that he shows and I find no one else even list. He shows many examples that I find but listed no where else. I am sure his personal expertise waned when he took on the whole USA. But Ohio typology does not always apply here and visa versa ? So for me it can be a good starting point in identification and then post here for advice confirmation and discussion. So where the book may not be perfect for your area it is a good beginners book and has been corrected as best as a book of that size can be. I would not buy books on Ohio typology unless I lived in Ohio. Does that makes sense? I think we have had this discussion before,,, If in Ohio buy Ohio books
Lar Hotham did not really do much for the south east. If I missed his book other than his projectile point book or anyone has a better suggestion I would enjoy the knowledge. I get a lot of my reading from archeological site reports in my area. Thanks for any guidance.

The only damage Overstreet did to the artifact community was put a price and grading in his guide. As far as reference it is a good source pulled from the finest collections and scholars across America............So use it to your benefit and do not think when you see a price and grade that your point will fetch anything like that. Prices in that book are the opinions of the owner and certain defunct authenticators.........................GTP(Chris)

I guess I should have been clearer in statement. His prices are the biggest factor for me not liking the book. He will have a common Point listed as being worth hundreds of dollars when in reality they aren't worth more than a few bucks tops. He also lists some things incorrectly, such as the Snapped Base Kirk, which doesn't exist and is just a broken Point. Maybe he has fixed some of these things. I wouldn't know since I don't own one and never will. I have looked through a few and was not very impressed. Just my opinion.

Finally Grim!!!! You are the only person that I have heard say that about the snap base. That is my conclusion as well on that piece. Just a broken based kirk!!!.............GTP(Chris)

Thanks guys

Keep asking questions and ask lots of them. We all learn that way. I never knew that there were some people who didn't think Overstreet walked on water. I learned something new also.

I have to say ... the fact that anyone can put a price tag on something like an arrowhead especially some European to me seems downright ignorant and pompous. That being said.... everything is only ever going to be worth what someone is willing to give for it. So those numbers are nothing more than a suggested retail price

I have a OS #12 and only use it to ID as for regions (not prices). The prices are wacked LOL. And the snapped base is still in there. I have seen not found some. They look to be broken then ground down at the base where the stem use to be. IMO they were then used as knifes not points.

Talking about points that don't exist, is an unfluted Clovis real or a publisher's mistake? I have an old book that list an unfluted Clovis. I've seen that challenged on the net.

Just to go on record I could careless about the $ I just like overstreet bc it helps me identify points..is there something better? If so I would really like to know! I want to learn all I can and learn the right way!

Umm..no, it's not the pricing. Overstreet sucks unless you want nothing other than a "pretty picture book". The information/ typology in it is horrible inaccurate. By request, i went through Overstreet guide and found that on almost every single page there is erroneous information that ranges from slight to grossly negligent mistakes.
