Folks, found this flat button at a site that has seen activity since about 1800. Im trying to get an object that dates in the time frame of the original owner, who died around 1840. He served in the War of 1812. It is pretty beat up, but it's thin and that's what got me excited. The only thing I can make out on the back are caret symbols all around (like <<<<<<<) and what looks like the word "GILT". Really hoping for a pre 1840s button here. Any guess to date are very much appreciated!

I should have done the photo under the loupe, oh well:

I would also like to add that it is almost identical in size to a penny and this is how thin it is:

Flat buttons like this are made mainly between 1790-1840. if you found one there are probably several more.

Good Luck, Bill
