HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — State officials are planning to drain a central Pennsylvania reservoir popular with anglers and boaters.

The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission says the dam at Centre County's Colyer Lake is in bad shape and poses a threat to residents and businesses downstream.

The commission plans to drain the lake so it can study the dam's structural integrity. The lake will remain drawn down until funding can be secured to make repairs.

The drawdown will begin next week and may take up to three months to complete. Biologists are developing a plan to remove and relocate as many fish as possible. Officials say the 77-acre reservoir in Potter Township will remain open for the first portion of the drawdown.

I wonder how many abandoned vehicles, washer's and dryers, stoves, guns, etc. they will find (and have to remove)!

looks like it was only built in the 60's

Colyer
(Potter) –– William Colyer built a sawmill, and lumbering became the chief industry of a small community at the edge of Tussey Mountain. A post office, general store, and two churches served Colyer area residents. In the 1960s the Pennsylvania Fish Commission placed a dam on Sinking Creek to create a recreational area, Colyer Lake.

Centre County History

so it may not hold any old coins. If it has swimming beaches, that could be a true gold mine!

I live like 15 mins from there

I live in Md but i wonder if i should go and a take walk with my detector lol. Who is going their when they get all the walter out?

I'm gonna try to find out when its happening

Yea if you could find out i might have to take a trip up their.

I'm gonna look into it tomorrow

My hometown. Manmade in the early 1960's. Only beach we have here is at Poe Valley State Park.

............. Found a formerly submerged log that was encrusted with lures. Makes up for the times I've been robbed by the hidden lure monster.

Hah! :laughing7:

Is it legal to metal detect the PA fish and boat commission lake that is being drawn down?

Seems to me IF it was not permitted BEFORE it won't be permitted during the draw down - but heck, what do I know!

That leaves two viable options - hunt and pray you don't get in trouble or ask for permission...

in the case of the PA Fish commission, if they have a local officer.

"Excuse Me. since the lake is being Drawn down,
would it be ok If I did some detecting for Lead Sinkers & Lures ?"

if there are any hill sides people fish off of.
search below them if possible.
I found several tackle box''s this way.
from them sliding too fast to catch.

I have asked for permission and waiting on a reply now. Do not know if it was legal before or not. The rules are very iffy. I figured I'd ask on here from someone who may have experience as well as have a printed email with me if granted access. If not, plenty of other places to hunt. I just want to get some of those big sinkers for melting into ingets for future possible needs. Thanks for the reply :icon_thumright:

I hardly ever see a local officer but my luck, as soon as I get the detector from the truck, there he will be with a chip on his shoulder and would want to take my detector. No offense intended toward any officers, just stating that would be my luck. I would end up being arrested by the new kid on the block trying to make a name. I will see if I can get written permission and if not, so be it. I can still walk around and look for surface lead. Thanks for the reply as well. You guys are some good people on this site. :occasion14:

I would think the Removal of lead for free would be welcome

but we all know how Bureaucratic brains work :dontknow:

they are all afraid to give permission when they can act like they have authority
to say no :(

Just got back word from the PA Fish and Boat Commission. I copied his reply

Yes, you can use the metal detector on the property, provided you are not digging large holes to recover items.
