Should be a good show we haven’t had one in Cartersville since before the pandemic. In the past we always had plenty of people come and visit

I have a show that I’m attending September 2nd and I have a smaller display case with beads also. I don’t have anything that’s really worth $ or fancy. I have some beads that came from the judacalla site in North Carolina. They are drilled holes in stone beads. they’re about 400 years old per David Dean, who found them, he was an archaeologist from Tennessee. I also have a bunch of beads that came from Huron areas in Quebec and also some that were given to me by a friend in the Seneca nations in New York. They are mostly 1800s. But there’s a few from the 1700s as well. those particular beads are Venetian beads, which are the more common. That’s my small contribution to my group’s table.

This is the 17th year of this event. It’s in Pennsylvania.

You should show them beads. Mine are fancy I know. But the average beads are always good to see. Make your own post and let’s see them.

So..here’s some of them. I’m still separating them according to age as I sort through them. I probably have 100 or so. The display box is pretty nice and using some nufoam and linen fabric, I’ve made pockets for them to sit in…5 pockets across the top and I have to laminate the cards I made with timeframes and details on the groups of beads. Those cards will fit below the pockets in the long area. I think it will look good once I’m done.

And then the beads. Some are seed beads, those are mid-late 1800s. They’re all glass except the obvious stone beads. Some of the glass ones that were recovered from onodowa areas in NY and they are older, and really faded as you can see. All glass beads are Venetian made. But some are 6-7 chevron layers, others are 4-5. There’s no “African trade beads” in my collection.

I’ve always been fascinated to think that the NA would trade enormous amounts of items for only a few beads at a time. Venetian beads were strongly desired for trade…the Europeans would literally load up the glass beads as ballast in ships…could you imagine how much they could fit for use as ballast?

But there is a quick pic of what I have. I need to get sorting.

Once I set up my laminated cards and finish sorting for a display, I can repost them in my own post. Better pics too.

One of these days I need to hit a show but I’d guess around 13-16 hour drive is a bit much, daltons and beads are a nice combination
yea. There's few REAL shows anymore. the antique gun shows anymore are a joke too. You end up with majority of tactical shotguns and ARs. Problem is, the attendance has dropped so much that the event coordinators don't dare turn them down, otherwise they'll have like 5 vendors. It's sad. With the Indian artifacts shows which are run in conjunction with the antique gun shows, we almost always give up tables for display for free to get more displays in there. On occasion you get someone mis-representing themselves as a school or professional institution and they try and sell too...which I guess you have to let go a bit too. Lately...it's the people coming with a hundred of agate arrowheads on a string that annoy me...always claiming they are bird points.

Those look better than you described. I’m sure you know how it is when you don’t know someone on the net. I was hoping they weren’t rocks lol. Do I see some Chevrons in the picture? They will be the rosettes style

Also I know that my beads are African trading beads. Some of these types are and have been found by diggers with artifacts. The Blue Russians have been found in the northern western side and the rattlesnake beads found on the eastern side of the USA. They are trading beads either way. I’m looking forward to seeing your post with better pictures.

Yes, I know how it is. And I’m glad they weren’t rocks. Chevron‘s always have a rounded end, roussettes, correct? And I don’t have them in any of the pictures. I do have some, but they’re not in that batch. I only have a few of those types and those were found in digs in New York State. They are on my shelf and need sorted yet. I have someone who really wants the old chevron ones so that he can do a better cleaning, which he’s very capable of doing , with his skill set, and he wanted to use for a display. I’m also aware that he is in archaeology and associated with several museums in Pennsylvania. and that makes me understand that if I lent them to him for display, I’ll never get them back. So I’m very hesitant. Correct me if I’m wrong but, you’d be cautious about lending them as well. Wouldn’t you?

Your selections really nice and like I said they’re very fancy. And they are all trade beads too. One thing you learn when dealing with any type of trade beads is when somebody tells you that you’re only going to find them in a certain area, don’t believe it. They’re trade beads, and you would be surprised at some of the places they show up. When I was in Alabama visiting, I stopped at a estate sale and gentlemen had an enormous collection of artifacts and I was going to buy some trade beads but he wanted to sell them as a complete collection and he was asking a hideous amount of money. by hideous, I mean to high of a price for me. They may very well have been worth it, but it is out of my price range.

I’ll definitely post some pics of the small display once I get it done. It’s not gonna be very big and I wanna make sure I get the details and facts correct too.

No doubt if you loaned them they would probably get lost. Besides Chevrons are the most expensive beads. A strand that is old can fetch thousands. I have one in the picture but it’s a reproduction but still worth a few bucks.

Next Saturday is the show.
Good luck at the show! We had our show this past weekend, September 2nd. I ended up not displaying because I was running out of time to prep. I had spent a great deal of time getting plans set up for a Atlatl throw that we have at the event and getting other items prepped. I decided to do a better display for the future.

There were maybe, one other trade bead necklace at the entire show with no stone beads presented at all. I was a bit shocked. I'll have to get my items together for next time.

Instead of reposting the flyer I’m just bumping the post. Tomorrow is the show. Should be a fun day hopefully some will come.
