Detector(s) used
CZ-7a Pro
I got my first detector at Christmas time. My sis and bro in law(known here as bearbqed) came for the holidays and he brought his 2 detectors. We hit the beach and everywhere we could. I had a great time and found some cool stuff including a silver ring, a .50cal shell and coins. My bro, being the cool guy he is said "ya know what, I'm going to give you that detector" He has a Minelab and is planning on getting the new Whites so this was just his backup. So now I have a new hobby and I am addicted! All I want to do is go hunt! Darn him! Ayway, I have been finding some coins but nothing major yet. I just downloaded the manual so I am learning new things about it.

My questions are, Will notching out pull tabs and foil prevent me from finding gold or silver? How come sometimes I get a strong signal in I.D. mode but nothing when I switch to pinpoint? I have other questions but mainly I am looking for pointers and advice from those who have used this detector for a while now. How high should I set the sensitivity for best results? How often do you ground balance while searching? I have the 8" spider coil, is it worth getting the 10.5" coil and why?

Any tips, tricks or advice anyone has would be greatly appreciated. I hope to have a banner find soon!

Most yellow gold rings will be in the pull tab range and notching or disc these out loses the gold rings. White gold rings with the big rocks are usually in the foil range so basicilly you have to dig it all. Since you are on the beach this is not a problem as the digging is easy. Just remember to fill your holes.

Targets that disappear in pinpoint might be because you still have to keep the coil in motion a little. I liked the days or zero motion all metal better like on the old TR detectors. Also sometimes the detectors sees a bunch or rust and when you dig you break up the halo so the detector doesn't see it anymore.

A larger coil covers more area per sweep and the bottom of the field is also larger so you don't have to overlap as much. Guys that don't over lap are the guys that you can hunt behind and find what they miss by not getting the coil over it. Also a DD coil covers more area at the bottom of the field too so this improves your chances.

Best way to set your disc is to find clean ground and lay down some coins, nails, pull tabs and gold rings an wave the coil over them while turning up the disc to see where they drop out. Don't use a lot of sens as this is where many lose out on more depth.

Yes I believe notching those out will cause you to miss out on rings and other jewelry. I use a CZ7A Pro and I notch nothing, I listen to the tones and depending on where I am at I will ignore iron tones if they sound off both ways. At the beach I dig everything. I run the sensitivity at 4 as if I go higher it gives false hits in my mineralized ground. I reground balance when it seems I am getting a lot of chatter or false hits. But be sure when you ground balance you find a spot that is free from any trash or other stuff to set off your detector. That may be what is happening to you when you pinpoint and find nothing. I have a 10.5" coil I use at the beach and while using it I have to mount the head on my belt due to the weight and it not being balanced as well. If the area is not trashy you can use it with good results.
I hope this helps, and good luck hunting the 7a pro is a good machine.
