Cylinder that looks like it's made of graphite...

Hello All,

Yes, this does cause the detector to beep. It appears to be made of graphite or some other substance, but it's heavy. It has a small post coming out of one end of it, which is made of brass. The thing tunes out around "5 cent."

Any ideas what this is, or how old it is? I have found pieces of them in fields before, but this is the first one that was whole.

Carbon cathode from the large dry cell batteries commonly used to power radios where electricity wasn't available and they weren't using the tractor to charge glass batteries.
