I went to a park this morning that has produced some relics in the past and found what I think is a brass telescope eyepiece or binocular eyepiece. Also found a blue tiger scarf piece or something that has two tabs on the back. And what I thought was a salt shaker says on the bottom "shake before use this end up". A little clad and some other odds and ends. When I found the eyepiece it was full of dirt and I just tapped it a little and that was when I noticed it had glass in it. I am pretty sure I did not break the lens as it was still packed in the dirt. I don't clean in the field as I don't want to damage the finds. It looks like an eyepiece to either a telescope or binoculars.

Nice finds Randy!! I have an artillery CW telescope and a light cavalry CW telescope. Both have a flared out "sun guard" on them. Does your eyepiece look like an eyeguard would have fitted on it? HH, Quindy.

I believe it is an eyepiece to a field-carried spyglass. Civil War? I don't know for sure. But it is definitely not a piece from a rifle scope and it is most certainly not a sight glass for fluid flow. That end piece has what appears to be really thick magnification glass, and the inside of the cap is threaded, eye pieces are normally removable for cleaning and replacement.
