Hello, I had found a CW button in this location earlier and was wondering if someone could help identify this shell. I will start off by saying that I know very little about this subject!

The pictures are OK, I was hoping that you could see some of the important detail. On the bottom of the shell, there is a clear 410 marking that you can see if you get the light correct. Unfortunately, it does not show well in the scan. The side of the shell has 2 bands on it and what is interesting, is that inside the shell, where the primer would be, it almost looks like a little holding pot thingy!! (yea, that is my professional description). There is also some "Gunk" stuck to the inside walls od the shell.

Thanks in advance for any help on this!

I have found some of those in a CW campsite. It says Western .410 caliber on the shell. I know these are old but not 100% sure if they are CW. Nice find none-the-less!

Not CW... to new. Might have a look at this site to see how far back the 410 goes.

Thanks for all the imput! I love this site!

I can tell you that I do not think it is a 410 shotgun shell, could be, just doesn't look like one. The only reference I could find was an M&M 410 CW bullet, that is what lead me to that. They stated:

Machined for rifle .54 caliber - M&M #410 variant - rings are spaced differently - slight bend to skirt on one corner but otherwise nice item for any bullet collection - dug Stones River Battlefield, Tennessee.

And it had the picture of the bullet itself which had the lines in it, similar to the shell.

I am going to check into the response from the other post. I have just never seen the wierd thing in the shell right behind where the primer is.

Looks like I will be quoting myself!!! (does that make me crazy?) After doing some more research, I am pretty certain that this is not of that era!! (like you were telling me). I am still curious as to what type of shell this is. It is much older than other shell that I have found and the primer is definitely different.

I guess the "hidden" treasure for me here is finding out more about it!

It looks like it may be a 410 shotgun shell w/o the upper plastic, not CW due to center fire primer. Thats just a guess. Congrats.

Yea, you are most likely correct, that is where I am leaning as well. I have fired 410's before, and this seems just a slight bit smaller than what I remember. When I look at the picture, I totally would agree that it is a 410. Just something about when I am holding it and looking at it, it just seems a bit different.

I am alteast doing some research on it now (which I totally enjoy). So, hopefully, I will not make dumb posts like this in the future ;D

I am just thinking out loud here now!

I am pretty sure that .410's are 10mm? If I measure the width of the shell, it is over 12mm on the bottom and over 11mm on the open part of the shell. Is this an exacting science with regards to the width or does it vary a couple mm sometimes. I am not a hunter, nor do I shoot guns often, so I am just wondering. I am hoping to go out and get some MDing for a bit today and I am just passing the time until then ;)

Again, I am bored and just thinking about it!

Old 410 Shot gun shell the old one's the top was made of a cardboard like paper that rots away and leaves just the bottom.

I agree...Just in a "high brass" variety

SCMDer, Not a dumb post. If you don't know, post it. That is the only way to find out. Good Luck.
