CW Relic Finds Today at a Gen. J H Morgan's CSA Cavalry Camp + 2 Mystery Relics

Our friend Josh invited VOL1266-X and myself to go relic hunting with him today at the site where I dug the CSA Tranter pistol bullet last Fall. Like Modern Miner knew yesterday, we knew today was probably the best day to hunt this week as rain turning to snow is predicted for the near future and the weekend. This site is close to a big spring near a large CSA Camp used by Gen. John Hunt Morgan's Cavalry Troops in 1863. This was our second trip there. Josh had other obligations this afternoon so we had to limit our hunt to 3 hours in the morning.
Pic #1 is our combined uncleaned finds. If you don't like the pics, blame VOL1266-X as he was the official photographer today. The bullets we recovered ranged from .36 cal. pistol balls to a .58 cal. 3 ringer. I dug the bottom part of an iron stirrup in the pic. All the relics were 6-12 inches deep. Quindy and Josh used their F75s and I had my SE. Josh found his first Eagle Cuff Button today. He was excited. He found a nice coat size Eagle there last Fall. I had one Eagle button fall to pieces in my hands today. We have recovered several eagle buttons from early war Morgan CSA camps.
Pic #2 are two relics that we could not I.D. I dug the brass piece on the top. Any guesses would be appreciated. The bottom of the brass relic is flat with no sign of attachment hooks. Josh found the small bullet that is approximately .36 cal. but there appears to be markings on the top and the bottom has a flat base. Again, all guesses are welcomed.
Pic#3- VOL1266-X made our picture at the site and it was a very nice Tennessee January day. We will certainly be going back there as we discovered the area where the buttons were immediately before we had to leave. By the way, I am the good looking one.
Thanks for looking and happy hunting from all 3 of us.

Re: CW Relic Finds Today at a Gen. J H Morgan's CSA Cavalry Camp + 2 Mystery Relics

Nice job on the relics guys. No idea what those two mystery items are, but I'm sure you know if Q can't ID them I don't stand a chance. You're right Dman, you are the best looking one. Which one are you? :tongue3: :laughing9:
Why do we never see a picture of Q? I'm surprised he had enough energy left to do the photo shoot. ;D
You guys never fail. Congrats.

Re: CW Relic Finds Today at a Gen. J H Morgan's CSA Cavalry Camp + 2 Mystery Relics

Good job you guys. Can you post a pic of the side of the bullet with the markings. I can't think of anything on the brass piece.

Re: CW Relic Finds Today at a Gen. J H Morgan's CSA Cavalry Camp + 2 Mystery Relics

the small one ? looks like a 4 hole underwear button but that's my guess ,great finds HH

Re: CW Relic Finds Today at a Gen. J H Morgan's CSA Cavalry Camp + 2 Mystery Relics

Nice pile of finds for the time. No idea on the brass piece either. :icon_thumright:
Now are you guys just neat and tidy, or did you go changing your clothes for this photo op.? ;D

Re: CW Relic Finds Today at a Gen. J H Morgan's CSA Cavalry Camp + 2 Mystery Relics

I think that brass piece is the end cap to a sheath knife. they would slide the handle over the tang and then the brass piece, then peen the center of the tang to hold the brass piece and handle on .

Re: CW Relic Finds Today at a Gen. J H Morgan's CSA Cavalry Camp + 2 Mystery Relics

That was a fun hunt indeed. As you know, Morgan Camps are my favorite CW sites to hunt as I had two Great, Great Uncles who rode with Gen. Morgan in the 9th Tennessee C.S.A. Cavalry. It's exciting to think that some of the relics that we recovered yesterday from that Morgan Camp belonged to one of my ancestors. The blade from the eating knife I found (or the spoon end you found) may have been used by my relatives (unfortunately just a 1 in 2,000 chance or so).
That was an interesting guess regarding the brass whatsit being the end cap of a large side knife. That has some merit. The little bullet may be a M & M #166 or 167 for a single shot pistol.
We will need to get back there with Josh for sure, Quindy.

I'm thinking the brass thingy is a end cap or sword pommel. The end piece on the handle of a sword.

Great finds, There's nuthin like history especially if one of your ancestors was involved!

So, Burt and Brad are now rubbing elbows with Tom Selleck's son, Josh? 8) :D I've got to get to TennEssee one of these days and see if I can get my picture taken with ya'll! :D I'd be the talk of the town! :D :tongue3:

That looks like some fantastic hunting! And awesome that you can hunt a place where your ancestors once spent time. Hope this winter storm doesn't spoil your hunting for too long.

Congrats on the hunt and the finds~ Nana

It's pretty obvious which one I am. I am the one next to the one that is not as handsome as the other one. We can't put a picture of Q on TN because it would scare all the children. ;D

The knife and spoon were probably dropped by you while you and your uncles were eating with J.H. Morgan. I always thought you were a little old to have served in the Civil War.

Sorry about the delay on responding but now we will not see Josh (who has the bullet with him) until next week due to the weather so we can't get another pic. The middle pic is a top view of the bullet that actually has a football look from the side like those double ended single shot pistol bullets. One end is flat and you can see what the other end looks like in the middle pic. The closest bullet I see to Josh's bullet in the bullet book is M & M #166 or #167. We did not have calipers in the field to measure it but I'd say it is close to .36 cal. Thanks for your interest and help.
