I found this at a 1756 Virginia home site that I hunt regularly. The home has been occupied through generations, and still is today. I've found coins from late 1700's to mid 1800's along with all variations of buttons, buckles, and other relics. This particular site has no Civil War history, no battles, no camp, no associated supply line travel route - nothing. So when I popped this out of the ground, I was both excited and confused. It is about the diameter of a silver dollar and it came apart in three pieces as I picked it up. The front having in US insigina, the middle being a blank piece of metal, possibly lead; and the back being completely rusted over, but a couple of bumps that may have been anchor points of some type. The front US area appears to be brass plated steel - same for the back. It weighs several ounces. I know it's old, but I have no idea what it is/was. Just wondering if anyone else has seen something similar, or may know what this is. Thanks for looking.
