I spent a couple of hrs. in the Confederate camp that I've been working and found a six inch cut piece of RR track. Could this have been an anvil? There were definitely cavalry soldiers there since "C" buttons have been found, however I am not too sure what to make of this and I don't have any idea as to how to age RR track. Has anyone found one of these in a CW camp?
I also found a high-base 3 ringer and a cartridge box finial.

Thanks for any info. or suggestions.--JB

I found one like yours this past summer. I cleaned it up and put it in my shop.

my dad had one just like that from the 1800s that he used as a anvil, brad

Clean it up and see if it has hammer marks on it. that would be the dead give away.

Congrats on the other finds.

Very possible that it was used as an anvil. I have seen them used as anvils in that way.

Congratualtions on the relic finds! :occasion14:

Sure could be , I have one I picked up at a garage sale for 10 bucks - in this size they are good for jewelry - not so much for serious silver smithing . I agree cleaning the top surface may tell you something.

I'd think anvil, I have a chunk on my work bench. I keep meaning to grind the top nice and flat one of these days. I remember seeing a web site that had a section on dating track by the end profile, but I can't seem to find it now
