CW lead, a Tombac, Bird Band, & lead in wood

Nothing major yesterday, but I did get a few keepers.
At lunch I detected at the farmhouse by work and dug a nice dandy Tombac button with shank, a tiny button w/design, and a few other odds & ends.

After work I hit the woods where I've been digging the CW bullets lately. With time to kill waiting for a coworker to join me, I decided to give the "bullet hole" one last shot. I was getting no signals at all so I decided to dig up about 8" of the loose dirt off the top of the hole and try it. Well Folks, that did the trick. I picked up a deep signal and dug not one, not two, but THREE MORE CW 3-ringers out of there again!!! That brings my total count out of that one hole to 20 bullets.
Enjoy the video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IzPaj5UjKWI

I remembered reading about a standard US cartridge box containing 20 bullets.
Picture attached from the CW relics book about the cartridge box.
Since all of these I found were in excellent shape, I just wonder if that's where these bullets may have come from? :icon_scratch:

Also out in the woods I dug what I believe is an NC bird band. :icon_scratch: It has "NC 207778" on it.
I will try to research this to see if I can find more info on what poor fella it came from originally.

I also hit a patch where my detector went nuts on signals. I ended up digging up all these pieces of round lead shot. Two of them were actually still stuck in the wood! :o I've been dreaming of some day finding a CW bullet still stuck in a tree, but this is the best I've done so far.
This shot all looks irregular, not round like modern shot, and looks to be fairly large too.
Could these be from the CW era possibly? Any idea you bullet pros?

Well, that was my day yesterday. Still no coins. :'( :icon_scratch:
Have a good one,
MM

Re: CW lead, a Dandy, Bird Band, & lead in wood

I think that's a large tombac button & not a dandy button, although its of a similar age

Very unusual to get the wood & lead - would make a good display.

Nice Digs

Thanks for the ID Crusader. I'll settle for a tombac button.

You're only one step away from digging that Box Plate Doug.....The Cleaner Bullet and then the "Box" The ball's look the size of a "buck-n-ball,on the average they should read .31.....Anywhere close?.The lead in wood is still on my wish list,Great find there......Congrat's on the button and the "urge" to dig the "Bullet Hole".....Bird Band's cool too!!!

Re: CW lead, a Tombac, Bird Band, & lead in wood

Doug,

Congrats on the finds ! I believe that leg band maybe a turkey leg band . I'm about ready to watch the new video. We finally got some rain and I went for a short time today. Found a few things but nothing worth noting. I'm hoping the new coil gets here tomorrow. Keep up the good work !

Re: CW lead, a Tombac, Bird Band, & lead in wood

Doug,

Great video. You need to list this under the Youtube setion on this forum. I'm truly amazed at the depth of the Silver Umax . I dug some junk today that was at least 14 inches deep with the stock coil. I maybe do a video on the stock coil vs 8x9 concentric to see how much of a difference there is.

Civ,
Here is another picture of them. Looks like about 3 per inch. What do you think? Are these pieces CW case worthy? :icon_scratch: ;D
Thanks again for recommending that CW relic book. I was able to find pictures and ID's on things I've found in the past, including the apothecary weight from the 18th century.

That figures that I would find a Turkey band. :tongue3: I thought it was a bit large.
I'll straighten it out and give it to my wife as a ring for Christmas. Hey, after 26 years of marriage I'm running out of gift ideas. :tongue3: ;D

Re: CW lead, a Tombac, Bird Band, & lead in wood

Doug,

I think you need to clean the band up and put it in a ring box and give it to her for XMAS :) My wife is always on me about finding a ring. Well last weekend I found a mood ring at a local school . She was all excited when I told herI found a ring. I got a good laugh after she figured out what it was . She at first thought it was a sliver wedding band :)

I wish I were a COIN magnet sometimes. I've tried being a chick magnet, but that didn't go too well either. :tongue3:

Some folks don't believe how far this machine will go, but I know darn well I've dug 1800's buttons at at least 12" in some of the fields I hunt.
Have fun with that new coil.

Doug,

That video was cool, man! That detector does punch deeply!

Keep digging that area out!

Re: CW lead, a Tombac, Bird Band, & lead in wood

Thanks, Doug, I hope we can strike some more. We hope some new fields are harvested!

I think, by the time this year is over, KKC will each have over 20 coppas.

Thanks DD.
I would like to put a hunt together at the 1770's plantation property. I may be detecting over there tomorrow if it doesn't rain.
I'll see if I can get the owners o.k. for a group hunt once the weeds die down.
All coins found go to me though. :tongue3: :tard: ;D
How's the river bank going?
