Hello everyone, I've been reading the forum for a couple of months now, and it is great! I really enjoy reading everyone's stories and seeing the interesting finds. I'm kind of new to MD'ing, got my cibola back around Christmas, and I've been itching to get out. After a few weeks of playgrounds and parks, (these were great, lots of coins and my pulltab collection is quit impressive ;D) my friend John and I decided to do some CW relic hunting.

So one day last week after work, we headed out to a friends farm in North GA and started hunting in his pasture. We had done some research and suspected this area could have some potential. After about an hour I got a weak signal, guess I had my discrimination set a little high, but we were digging everything! About 6 inched down, I found this iron thing...I thought at first it was just a farm tool or spike, or something like that, but it did have a hammer like feel to it and the hammer head did appear to mushroom out a bit, although it looks shorter than a regular hammer head.

Then John found this picture in his Civil War relic book...I think we may have identified it. What do you all think? It looks like my hammer has had the head cut off a few times or just worn down maybe. My father-in-law is a carpenter and he said, many times (in the olden days) they would cut off the end of a hammer to get a flat surface again...I don't know, but it's a theory.

Anyway, just thought I'd share a picture with you and tell you how much I enjoy the web-site.

P.S. we also found a square nail...going back in a couple of days, I'll keep you posted.

Great finds, congrats. Good luck on more.

PJ: Welcome! Your Hammer find looks like the Book to me, but what do I know? ;)
