Does Anyone know an easy way to date Civil War Era 'or before' Pocket Knives?
As opposed to those from say the 1880's-1960,s .

I have dug quite a few over the years , some where CW relics were also found .
&
What is the best way to preserve them?

Any help will be Wonderful ,Esp Pictures.

Thanks

Can you show some photos? Easier to figure out the process they need.

most of the civil war pocket knives I've found in yankee camps have a small brass shield on them.

You will need to identify the name of the knife maker and then search the history. I use electrolysis and ultrasonic cleaner to clean my relics. Look up Aquachigger on youtube, he has a great video on preserving relics using hot wax.

Here is a picture of one side from a brass sided pocket knife that I found MDing. See text below some for some info. 100_1007-A.jpg

Those are pretty hard to date I think but there's one guy here(can't remember his name right now) that knows a ton about that era pocketknife.

I forgot about this post 'Sorry'
Many do have a Brass Shield as do many of the later ones 'Just minor Differences in the Shield'.
Don't think I've found an all Brass one 'Yet'

Yes cmthunder ..Some do look like that, & one or 2 have Opened Blades or half opened.
Thanks For the Reply's
I'm way behind on Cleaning my Relics ,esp, the Iron ones.
