I see the ".SCOVILL CO./WATERBURY" backmark in my book, but it doesn't state the years of manufacture for that particular backmark.

Thanks for checking. One website said that backmark is ca. 1850-1860. I just can't find any 1-piece examples.

I also find it odd that its kind of an oblong circle shape.

No, it's a good button. I have found a few that have had similar damage. It is Civil War and a nice example!

The *Scovill Co* Waterbury backmark dates from 1840-1850. Is your button 1 piece? Is it flat? I ask because according to what I read the 1 piece buttons are supposed to be convex. Maybe someone else can enlighten me as to where I can find more information because I am stumped.

Yes, one piece and flat.

I'm stumped too.

Unless maybe it was convex at some point and then flattened. Perhaps could explain why the back mark is so much smaller than the edge of the button.
