Does it have anything written on the back? If so I might be able to tell you something. If it has a stud instead of a hook it might be a WWI collar stud. If it has a shank and nothing on the back I don't think I can help on this one.

whether it was a hook or a shank its broken off and i dont see any writing on the back-sure appreciate your help Va!
Dad gummit i thought i found a CW button. Anything certain tip you off about the 1st button not being CW era?

The iron back.

Navy buttons from that era did not have an iron back. They were either brass two-piece buttons or hard rubber buttons.

thanks guys! next time lie to me and tell me otherwise-lol!

Like Buckle Boy said, the ironback.
The type of shank and how flimsy it is is another
Also the thickness of the eagles, body, legs and wings. On most civil war navies the eagle will have thinner features and the chest is usually not raised so much.
If you look on ebay you might find a button just like yours that was dug at Gettysburg. :laughing7:
