CW Button? Wax Seal?

I found this at a site that was allegedly once a house used for a hospital during the Civil War.

The diameter of the circle is almost identical to that of a penny.

It seems to me to have a slight green patina to it...but, being color blind, I could be seeing things.

My wife thought it might be a button to a heavy coat, but I don't see any hole in the shaft to allow thread to sew the button on.

Shoot...it might not even date back that far....there was some 'modern' trash mixed in with some of the older stuff.

Hoping the experts here might know what it is.

Wax seal? Maybe..but the signet is very bland/non-descript. Weren't those normally somehow decorative or unique?

And (showing my ignorance), wouldn't a seal be inverted/reversed?

Could it be a knob of some sort?

Looks like some kind of image on the "seal", can you make it out? Maybe press it into some sculpy and see what it leaves behind. Definitely doesn't look modern and I've found very non-descript lead seals on C.W. campsite. I'd definitely spend some more time hunting that spot!
