I haven’t had a chance to post the last few days so I will catch up today. Thursday I went to a local park that has produced some nice finds in the past. It is ajacent to the site of one of the civil war encampments in the town. The park has been hunted for over 30 years and some spots are pretty clean, but there are still pockets of good stuff left to find.

I spent 3.5 hours searching and I did find a decent spot. I dug a nice .58 cal minie and a B&O railroad switch lock key made by the FRAIM company. I also found some clad and the usual tabs and trash.

When I was loading up the truck I noticed someone coming out of the overgrown wooded area with a metal detector. His name was Terry he had managed a couple of minies, a token and an 1894 O barber dime. I had thought about trying the wooded area, but wanted to wait until fall when the weeds are gone. But since Terry was having luck there I thought I might try there the next day.

So Friday I went to the park. When I got there Terry was also there and he had a friend Greg with him. We introduced ourselves and talked for a while. They were new to me, but I was not new to them. I have given several metal detecting presentations and there was an article about me in the paper when they were doing a series on hobbies about 5 years ago and they both had seen it. After a while we headed into the woods and tried our luck.

We spent a couple of hours together working the woods. Terry got some copper wire and odds and ends, but nothing special. Greg found an Indian head penny (it was kind of crusty, not sure about the date) and a watervaliet Arsenal CW bullet. I found another minie another bullet that looks CW but too mangled to be sure and a .36 cal pistol ball. Terry and Greg had to leave so I decided to leave the buggy and weedy woods and go back out into the mowed area of the park.

I was jealous of Greg, because I only found 2 Indian heads last year and they have been hard to come by lately. I found a little clad and was working my way around trying to find a good spot. I was in the grass behind one of the newer pavilions and I got a good sounding signal. I bent down to pinpoint and spotted a penny ina bare spot about 6 inches from the spot. I picked up the penny and dug my signal thinking it was probably another penny dropped at the same time as the one I just picked up. Wrong! It was a penny, but it was a 1901 Indian head! Hopefully that’s a good sign for the future.

Today I had a lot of errands to run, but was hoping to get a little time in when I was done. While I was driving around I noticed that one of the fields I have permission to hunt had been mowed. I have only been there once before for about an hour and had a little luck. I have been told there was a football field the teams used to practice on in the middle of the field so I had hopes of a big score. I did have some luck, but no “BIG” score. I pulled a 1950 silver dime, two West Virginia bird bands from 1932 and a flat button. The dime was the only coin I found. There are also a couple of brass whatsits and the usual nails and misc. recyclables. The button is a little different. It is a little concave and it has an erect intact steel shank. I have found tombac buttons with rusted shanks, but no brass ones.
