Hey guys,

Pulled this little beauty out of the surf today on a tidal hunt. The date is XX(2 or 7)3 (I suspect 1773). Initially I assumed it was a cut 2R, however the R U M on the back is throwing me. The 1773 2R has REX vs RUM (the 4R on the 1773 depicts correctly although this one seems a bit on the small side to be a 4R). The front of the coin has I . G . Also curious is the thickness, about the same as the 1R cobs I've recovered in the past...significantly thinner than my intact 1778 1R. Perhaps a counterfeit? As always thank you for your expertise!

FINAL ID- 1773 Seville 2R

Thanks as always Don, didn't notice the mint mark - I am having a bit of trouble with the 3. In the Charles IV example you posted the 3 is rounded, in mine it is square. Given the Charles IV date range (1788-1808) the last 2 digits could only be 1793 or 1803. Is there an example of an Seville minted 1793 with a square 9 and square 3??

Could this one be a counterfeit?

VMI Digger,

The difference in the Date digits and especially the "3" as well as the distance of the Date from the Bust of Charles the IV is due to the fact that your' found cut coin was not minted in Spain. It was likely minted at the Lima Mint or one of the other Mints still in operation in Central or South America as well as Mexico City.

Thanks Frank, however this one was minted in Spain (Seville mint mark). South and Central American mints used REX vs RUM on the obverse.

If you're hung up on the date (and you're still convinced it's a 2R) then you may wish to consider Carlos III (1773) or Fernando VII (1823 and 1833)--all with the same design and Seville minted dates ending in '3'.

That's really nice find. I found one back in 2013 on a Delaware beach, and some decades ago. Hard to get.
