Found this cut reale and can't ID it. It is very thin (1.1MM)and weighs 1.3gms. I thought it was very worn but then the detail is still good. Calculating the coin diameter from the 1/4 peice I come up with about 26 to 27MM. Also it would make the coin weight at about 5.2 gms. I can't find any design like this in my KP book. Any ideas?

Jrhinely,

Nice find!

I think that you have a 1/4 of a 2-Reale machine struck Philip V coin. Probably period 1716 - 1759.

The obverse has the crowned Spanish shield. The reverse has the arms of Castile and Leon.

The legend on the obverse is: PHILIPPUS V D. G.
The legend on the reverse is: HISPANIA - RUM - REX
The weight of the complete coin would be about 6.7g

Here is a similar coin for reference:

Very Nice Find Jr.

Moe is correct...Philip V.
The type you have dates to 1729 or 1730.
It was struck in Spain, Seville Mint. You can clearly see the S*V*D The ornate flowerettes between the *PHILIPPUS*V*D*G* and the lack of assayer or mint mark in the normal postion indicate it is the from Seville...

* denotes position of ornate flowerettes

There is a perfect example in Numismatica Espanola 8th edition.

I am now positive...it dates to 1729 or 1730 only. KM#340.

Very nice,
Trez

I agree with Moe............

awesome find
but I'm curious about the straight / fine cut on the one side
can someone tell me how they made such a clean cut

Probably with a 17th century lazer! I would think either a chisel, or a sharp hatchet, either hit with a hammer. Doesnt look like it was sawed.
