Congrats on the half dime! Wonder why they cut the 184? Large Cent - surely not to make change!

Congrats on the half dime! Wonder why they cut the 184? Large Cent - surely not to make change!

I found a quarter piece of a Large Cent a few years back, probably was cut for change, not sure when that practice stopped but probably legal until passage of the Coin Act of 1857 perhaps.

Nice finds!

Great finds. The cut large cent is definitely interesting. At least you got most of the date.

Thanks for posting the cut large cent, I don't remember seeing any cut copper coins posted before. Last year I found a cut copper (coin?) from a colonial site and have not been able to identify it. Unfortunately it is basically smooth. Someone had unsuccessfully tried to add a hole to it. At first I thought it could be cut from an early large cent, but at 20 grams it seems a bit heavy.

That is a remarkable coin you found there, a great addition to any collection.

Thank you! This is the only large cent I have found. I always thought it was a bit odd, and until found this post today I didn't realize that this occurred. I thought this was only silver and gold they cut like that

Thanks for posting a picture of the house! I wish more people would do this because it really helps me pick out potential hunting spots when I'm driving around, etc. I think I have this picture in my head of what a good spot "should" look like, but every time somebody posts a picture like that it hits me as "hey, I've got like a dozen places that look just like that in my area"

Great finds! One of These days maybe the Adair co. oklahoma boys will find something from the 1800's. Nice to see pic of the house also.

Thanks all. Just makes you wonder what a qrt. of a penny would buy back in the day. Candy?, cup of flour? Who knows...
I enjoyed seeing pics of the other cut coppers also. Thanks for posting them.
