I found this on the ground surface. I think it was pulled out a few years ago by the farmer at the site when he was dozing some debris.

Outside end is tapered, inside end loop is probably broken but I am not positive it was meant to close.

Ideas?

Thanks! ;D

A trivet is a good idea :icon_thumleft: I don't think the tapered end is broken though. It looks intentionally made.

Re: Curled Iron

:laughing7: Yes, Solved!

It's a Unicorn Shoe.

I think I will tell my kids that. What is sort of wonderful is that they will believe it.

I really like your iron railing idea Breezie. On most sites I think it would be a slam dunk. But something about what I have gained for the feel for the people who lived at this site makes me not so sure it would work there.

It is a rural farm site way off the main road. It was owned by only one family - very frugal (Scottish! ;D). They built it and owned it for over a hundred years.

This idea actually seems more fitting to me -
Looks like a hand forged spring harrow or cultivator...... to me.

-though by looks alone the decorative iron railing idea is the winner -

Since you know the history, then I would agree that it is part of a cultivator. It doesn't seem logical that particular family (and area) would have a wrought iron railing with a curly-que . . .ahhh, I mean Unicorn shoe! LOL, Breezie

Re: Curled Iron

Bramble, after thinking about the family history, I remembered I had seen a Civil War curled iron candlestick in one of my books. I finally found the pic today. It is on pg. 99, Vol.2 of Civil War Collector's Encyclopedia by Francis A. Lord. I know the pics below are not that great, but it does look like your curley cue and would make more sense than a fancy curl on a wrought iron fence. Whutcha think? Breezie

Re: Curled Iron

Wow! Breezie thanks for finding that! You have quite the memory :hello2: I'm very impressed.

Good idea from you too Mike :icon_thumleft:

Thanks Plehbah. You know it :laughing7:

I don't know that this can ever be solved with certainty but I really appreciate all the great ideas.

Though I might have to throw this one into check in honor of Breezie and the A+++ effort ;D

Due to the thickness of this Hammered pc
I'm sticking with the ornamental direction
fence, gate or railing
