Curious Iron Item

I found this today at an old colonial home site. I have found a few old buttons and a few King George II and III coins along with lots of modern stuff too. I think its old because it was pretty deep and right next to a hole I dug with an old iron skeleton key but I really have no clue what it is. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Almost looks like an old cast iron pipe cover like a drain cover. but that is just a guess.....
