I was hoping someone might know what type of working these might be pictured below. I'm no expert so could use some more experienced eyes.
On foot these cuts first appear as level attempts at roads cut parallel to the steep hillside, but upon further investigation none of the levels seem to connect to each other.
It appears to be work done by earlier miners as there are some mature trees now growing along many of them.
The majority are near the top of the hillside and descend about midway. None are near the main water channel flowing in the valley below though some intersect with the dry wash creeks that have some minor waterflow in the winter.
My first though is perhaps they used these as ditches to carry water, but why cut so many into the hill? Obviously it took a lot of work.
Perhaps they used each level as a type of sluice and shoveled down material from above into the cuts then washed it out, and proceeded to do the same below as they worked the hillside.
Wouldn't hydraulic mining have been more effective though?
The area has known placer gold and lode gold deposits.
Very odd to me. Hopefully someone might have some ideas.
