Took Sat @ 2:00 pm. I had a hot doe come by and it was like a train after that. A good 8 another little 6 a 4 and 2 spikes and this guy. I saw about 17 deer total. Was windy gusting at 20 mph and temp in upper 30"s. I had hurt my shoulder and could not comfortably crack my bow so took my ten point pro fusion . A crazy wicked cross bow. Have been on a big dark horned 10 but may have lost him. This is 5 or 6 so far this year but the first for my freezer as I fill some others first. We are allowed 11 per season. I am thankful for this deer. He had some age and weight on him and would never have been anything but a 6 so it was an easy decision. He was scarred up pretty bad and kinda chunky and fat!
Had my butcher cut some chops from the back straps and inner loins for the grill. I am thinking of all the great meals this animal will provide and the delicious recipes I have.
Pardon the mess at my old hunt camp.
Hope everyone has a safe successful season

Ummmmmmmmmmm venison.

Looks like the ''rut'' has started (neck). Nice cull buck!

Yes sir they are breeding and exploding out of the wood work here.

Those inner loins are the best.....so tender.

Nice Buck.

My freezer's full, so I let my buddy sit with his 82 yr old Dad in my box stand, for Ohio's gun season. It's a beautiful set up, nestled in the pines, over looking a corn pile @ 35 yards. They hunted 5 or 6 times through the week, but the bucks they were seeing were too small for the old man.

Finally Sat. morning a nice big 8 pt. came in hot on a doe, stopped on the corn...and the old fella forgot to shoot. The buck walks off, and the old man started getting shook up. It walked back in, broadside 35yds., he remembers to shoot this time, but misses clean over his back. 20 ga. open sights.

Buck trots back 50 yds., then walks in again, 40 yds. BOOM! over his back. The doe sticks around, and here comes the buck again....and of course he missed it a third time. He and his son were laughing so hard when they were telling the story, it was clear to see they had a good time regardless. My buddy said his Dad was shaking so bad, the whole box stand was shaking.

We checked for blood, none, jumped the buck n doe up, got a good look at him, not a scratch.

Good to know you can still get excited when you are in your eighties.:laughing7:

Makin meat !
Next year will be my entry into cross bow hunting.
Congrats, and thanks for looking to others needs.
While short on numbers of deer this year, being able to share venison has been a gift to both those who give and those who receive here a long time.
Fun ol man tale Gold Maven. Lot of air around a deer!

Lots of air around a deer! I have to remember that one. Funny. Great story Maven. I hope that I never get to old to feel the excitement. For someone that has never experienced buck fever it is hard to explain how the heart speeds up and the body starts shaking uncontrollably . I was at full draw one time and it hit me and I pulled the knock of the arrow and the arrow fell to the ground the deer looks at me I am still at full draw with just a knock on my string. It is wonderful to share the hunts with others. I take an older gentleman and he sits in a ground blind or pop up dog house. I always try to get him into the best spots and hope that he gets that big one. I have had my days and am not greedy.
