I had most of an afternoon on Monday to hit the old park again with my CTX. This park has been so hunted over by so many people that it's not even funny. Back when metal detecting first became popular, there were regular meets here and detectorists literally covered the place. A lot of them returned repeatedly over the years (sure would like to have seen some of the "hauls" from the early hunts!!! Can only imagine the piles of silver). The park was a fairgrounds for a great many years and also hosted popular baseball games (the St. Louis Browns played here for a number of years as well). In any case, I keep expecting the silver and old coins to dry up but the CTX squeaked out a few more. Most of the day I spent wandering areas that I don't normally hunt in the park. Not much success for the most part except for a couple of clad pocket spills and 2 isolated, and deep, wheat cents until I decided to head back to one of my favorite spots. As I turned to head back that way I got a real mixed up signal that I knew was at least 3 different targets. I figured it was either a bunch of junk with perhaps one coin mixed in, a pocket spill, or just some shredded aluminum. As I popped the plug, the first thing I saw was a pull-tab. I knew that wasn't what I had heard so I kept poking around and saw something that I just didn't believe....a small gold ring! I don't normally dig gold signals in this park because it is so incredibly full of pull tabs and wadded up foil, the stuff is everywhere! Also in the side of the hole was a shredded and wadded up bottom 1/3 of an aluminum can. Now I can't swear to the fact that finding the gold ring wasn't just pure luck and accidental BUT.....I'll count it! After that I hit the other spot and pulled out a deep silver Washington that was so faint and mixed up by other signals that I was sure it was going to be a penny! I was just as surprised to see it as I was the gold ring. I hunted a bit more and finished up the day with a deep silver rosie that was trying to hide under a wheatie signal. I love finding those, hearing them is almost like trying to listen to a TV show over someone talking.....you know you're hearing it but you have to listen real hard to understand what is being said.... All in all, a pretty good day hunting a park that most people don't bother with anymore....
Happy Hunting to all!!
