"CS" button ? Pictures added *SOLVED*

This button was dug in a pit that had nothing modern in it. There were about 5 "CSA' buttons that came out of it, a "Georgia", a "VMI", a "Georgia frame" buckle, and various knap sack parts and odd & ends. The pit was about 2 - 3 feet deep. The back has a similar back to some of the local confederate backs. Never seen one like it. A friend of mine found it yesterday and is dieing to know what it is.


Well I talked with William Leigh and it turns out its a good one. He said he has only seen one other than this one. The other came from a pow camp. Its a local confederate button.

In fact, haven't seen anything yet.

That "pit" certainly was a dandy though, with quality finds like you've described.

The back doesn't look "right" to me. The remains of the shank look like cast brass and very modern. I think it may be a fantasy piece that somehow made it's way into that pit.

I hope I am wrong because if that is a newly discovered, or super rare CS button then you've got yourself quite a payday. Please keep us in the loop!

Looks like the shank was just broken off - remaining metal has a "fresh" look to it. Pretty interesting find though. Look forward to seeing it i.d.'ed...

WOW!!!

One of only two known examples of a CS local? Doesn't get much better than that.

Amazing condition with loads of gold gilt. A "pit" like that certainly deserves more diggin' attention.
