Ol Rick and I got out again for a good hunt today, we started with checking some fields that we are just itching to get on but the crops are still in and the hay isn't cut yet, all though on one field I eyeballed 2 cobalts, not that old but I just like cobalts reguardless of age.
Next we hit a field that gave up a nice 186? (possibley a 4) large cent, 2 small, most likely french musket balls, a buckle and a crusty broken spoon.

But when I started to clean up the spoon I saw hullmarks so I did a small scrape with a file and bingo, it was shiny. So I put it to the wire wheel and it cleaned up nice. I do not think the silver content is very high in it but it is still silver... I think.

Rick had a good day too but I am sure he will put up a post on his finds. Here is my group shot.

Interesting...are the hallmarks real...meaning are they recognizable? Sure looks like silver.

They might have been but once I put it on the wire wheel they got worn down a little. It's heavy like silver but I think low quality.

I actually think with all those hallmarks - that you have sterling silver - If you post close ups of those marks - the metal quality , date , city ,
monarch , and makers, can likely still be gotten . Great finds !

Thanks Argentium I will see if I can get some macro pix up.

Here is a shot of the hullmarks but I can't make out a darn thing on them. Maybe someone else can do a better lob?

Nice finds !!
I have several flatwares with 'Pseudo hallmarks', early American & Colonial silversmiths used them to make their wares look like the fine Brit silver, have them in both silver and base metals, As you know, that saltwater silver can look deceiving,
many times it's taken testing to find out what I have found.
Recovered a heavy spoonbowl from the mud, filed it away as pewter because of its size and shape, found a handle the following year, triangular stem shape matched the bowl, so I put them together and it fit like a key.
Turned out to be a sterling spoon, 63 grams, and made in Salem Ma by Jabez Baldwin CA 1795, someone scratched a crude "M" on the handle, it is one of my favorite recoveries

Congrats on the Coppa Too! HH, Herbie :occasion14:

Thanks for the info Herbie, I was thinking that it might be something like that but I don't think that I will ever find out for sure due to it being in such poor condition.
Good hunting to ya,

Nice stuff there love that blue glass! So far have seen only pieces and fragments out here, maybe I might try digging if I find the dump area or privy someday!

Great finds Dave, looks like you and Rick are in 'Silver Mode' these days! :occasion14:
Man I wish I could 'eyeball' cobalt glass like that on the farms I hunt!

Congrats on the NS LC too!
