Cru'Dad's First Saxon Sceat...

As our year is winding up & the choice of land is limited we wanted to stay on track for our best Roman Count ever, so we decided on a Roman Site some distance away. As luck would have it, it's condition had improved 10 fold from the last hunt a couple of weeks back, as it was perfectly flat (drilled & rolled). :icon_thumright:
We only expected 10-20 Roman Bronze Coins but we got a big surprise:

55 Roman Bronze Coins
1 Roman Pinhead
Tudor Button
Livery Button
Unusual 18th C Button
Silver 18th C Cufflink (new design for the collection) :)
Roman Bits..
Medieval Belt Slide
Medieval Buckle & plate
Poor hammered Penny (York Mint)
Cut halfpenny of Henry II 'Telby' Type (sadly broken) :(
Cut halfpenny of Henry III

And maybe a story you have heard before  :D Cru'dad got a Saxon Sceat 30 metres from the edge of the field whilst on his way back to the car. We had done 13 man hours of gridding & it turns up right at the last minute. Not only that it's his first Sceat after 15 years of hunting. (took me nearer 20) :headbang:
Still need to fully ID, but its circa 700AD :icon_thumright:

that's what its all about! Great hunt!

Re: Cru'Dad's First Saxon Sceat...

Nice finds So much, you take a wheel barrow. The soil there looks like potting mix and you find it a grid to dig. Wish i had digging that easy.

Congratulation "crusader"
Very nice sceat, but also Roman coins found.I I've never found a roman currency even in areas where the romans had stationed...We concluded that in these places romans knew wood currency :tongue3:

Fantastic finds, as usual.
The sceat reminds me of one found on this page (at least the coin side showing the "ToT, forward slash and back slash" in the standard).

Don.....

The ToTII reverse is standard to quite a few types. It's the letters/runes in front of the head which are hard to match

This field is far from potting mix (maybe compared to your soil :dontknow: ) , it's heavy clay & we are having a dry Oct, so we are still smashing solid rock like lumps with the back of the spade & digging below the first 3 inches takes jumping on the spade 1/2 inch at a time. We have very few sandy sites like you suggest, I could only dream of that, it would be great, because the condition of finds would improve as well.
The one thing you were nearly right about is we had at least 1 Roman Coin a run (accept 1 run).
PS. You could have it that easy

Re: Cru'Dad's First Saxon Sceat...

Correct, as a dealer friend said, the soil has clean it. (because I did nothing) :icon_thumright:
